Possible causes for blown rear main seal?

well I just got a call from the dealer informing me that I have a blown rear main seal and it needs to be replaced...$900 later

anyway, what are some possible causes of this? what normally would cause this to happen, or is it like a somewhat common occurrance? Im guessing maybe my tranny mount isnt quite up to par and as a result maybe the torque may have loosened up the sea as the tranny/t-case shifts under load. I dont know if this is a reason, but it kinda makes sense to me.

so what do you guys think?

How many miles is on the engine? Maybe its just normal wear and tear. Poor lubrication and excessive blow-by at the piston would cause this too. If you plan on repairing it yourself there's a good days work ahead of you.

138K on the motor, I'm not doing the work myself, its being done at the dealer right now.
I dont really have the time, patience, or tools to drop the tranny and replace this thing.

900$ wow

I think 900$ is way too much. 300-400 maybe. Is this a 3.0 all you need to do is take the trany out undo the clutch and flywheel and it should be right there. I am not sure what would make it where out without the whole motor going bad. did you by chance nock it out of place when you did the 2wd to 4wd swap. How long ago did you do the swap? I can’t really see why one would go bad.

I've had the same problems with my 3.0 but from what I've found out, the PVC valve is the most common cause if not normal wear. Mine doesn't get any rough treatment or heavy loads but if the transmission is tight and the tab pins that align the engine and housing are in place the torque shouldn't be a problem!! I did a sleeve kit n the crank this time and gonna see what happens. My crank didn't look centered in the seal when I pulled it this last time. Looked more like it was riding the lower edge of the seal!!

The PCV is a PIB on the 3.0 and usually gets replaced less. Crankcase pressure builds up and forces oil out. And yes, I've had my rear main oil my clutch.

My main was leaking in the '95 and I had the dealer swap out the PCV. I'll check it tomorrow to see if it's continuing to leak.
