I'll get my report tomorrow, but it looks like the viscosity, after leaving it in for a year but less than 20,000km (12,500 miles), is quite high. It's way too thick to resemble 5W-30, that's for sure, unless it was contaminated w/other oil residue from a drain pan when they filled up the bottle for me (I wasn't the one doing the oil change).
I'm starting to think it's a bad idea to leave it in for so long. I'll find out more and post my report tomorrow.

Well, got the report in. Only thing not on here is TBN (that's another $15 to do). After a year in my engine with quarterly filter changes and oil top-off, here is how the Amsoil syn 5W-30 ended up:
1997 Toyota 4Runner 3.4L V6
Amsoil Synthetic 5W-30
Aluminum: 5
Silicon: 41
Copper: 14
Chromium: 0
Iron: 19
Lead: 8
Tin: 0
Silver: 0
Nickel: 2
Molybdenum: 18
Manganese: 314
Vanadium: 1
Sodium: 11
Potassium: 3
Zinc: 1508
Boron: 43
Barium: 0
Calcium: 1956
Magnesium: 256
Phosphorous: 947
Oxid: 27
Sul: 35
Nitr: 58
Viscosity @ 40 degrees C (104 degrees F): 87
Viscosity @ 100 degrees C (212 degrees F): 14
As you can see, the viscosity is too high but the acceptable concern level was in the green, which means it was not necessary to change the oil, it was still doing its job.
So all in all, I guess the Amsoil 5W-30 held up through spring/summer/fall/winter/spring (12 months, with around 20,000 km). I might start changing it out every 6 months though, instead of 12 just to keep it fresh.

Interesting results HBoss, I definitely noticed one time when I left mine in for ~12k miles that it was extremely viscous. I currently have the regular 5w-30 in now and will test it again around 7500 miles to see how the numbers are.

Wow!! After 12 months of use those results are pretty good. Hardly any engine wear at all. Although it would be nice if there was a TBN result to see how well the oil held up. What kind of oil filter are you using? Your silicon level is pretty high which means your oil is pretty dirty. What amazes me is that even though the silicon was high there was hardley any bearing or engine wear at all. Good results! Hope mine turns out this well.

After 12 months of using the same oil in above 86 degrees F and below -22 degrees F weather, I can't say I'm at all disappointed.
Silicon was a bit high, I'm using the Amsoil air filter & at one point there was a hole in my airbox that would have bypassed the filter. That may have caused that high value.

I looked at the results, but I fear I just don't know how to interpret them or something. Why should a fuel additive affect the oil quality (unless something is getting past the rings?) and what are the negative side effects?

"Why?

This is what I think is happening. It doesn't affect the oil quality per say. Rather, fuel additives such BG44K or Chevron Techron cleaners are designed to clean out carbon deposit buildup. Those carbon buildup usually end up in the motor oil and act as an abrasive. Once those abrasive particles streaks start circulating through the engine, it makes it's way to the crackshaft bearings causing elevated Lead or bearing wear. Hope that helps

I'm two months shy of one year with Amsoil. But I am going to change it out next week. I will be having this oil analyzed. So far I am very happy with the oil but I too am going to be changing it out every six months. I'll let you know how the results come out. Any idea how long it takes to get the results?

If I remember correctly my results took about 3 weeks, however, if there is a possibility of engine failure they will contact you immediately. Not sure if you already bought the kit, but I found the test result format from the Amsoil company to be superior to the other companies.

Just sent mine in a few days ago. 6 months on Amsoil...but I did add a can of tha BG44 a few months ago before I read this thread. I guess I'll see what happens to my oil. I used the Fumoto drain valve for a very clean fill of the test bottle. I guess the only drawback I can see is the oil will stream out much slower...no biggie. I'll post my results when it comes back.

OK. Got my results today. Bottom line, their recommendation: No corrective action required. Oil is suitable for continued use.
Below that it says" Trace of water present Nitration elevated viscosity is out of indicated grade Check pollution control system change full flow filter. I have a new PCV valve and of course I changed the filter. Here's my numbers, please let me know what you think.
Iron 6
Chromium 0
Lead 2
Copper 8
Tin 0
Aluminum 2
Silver 0
Silicon 5
Boron 22
Sodium 5
Magnesium 775
Calcium 2097
Zinc 1450
The rest were 0
Additional Tests
TBN 5.46
Oxid 21.0
Nitr 45.0
Visc @ 100 C 15.98
As I mentioned..I did put in the BG additive AND I cleaned out the throttle body. Should I keep my Amsoil (0-30W) in another 6 months? Thanks.

Hey Butnut, doesn't the results give you what your truck's oil is in one row and what is average in the other? If yes, then how'd you do? I am awaiting my results as we speak.

No, but now that you mentioned that, I took another look...DOUH! :pat: The part I wrote above about the water and PCV was for my "OLD" oil test...it seems it's a permanant record, it was from 2000. My new numbers are hella better and NO water. I had an original silicon of 29 and now its 5...I believe it was due to the cone filter, I switched back to stock box with open front and a K&N. So these numbers are after I did the BG cleaner and throttle body clean with carb cleaner. I guess the BG did'nt mess up my oil numbers? The recommendation is:No corrective action required, oil suitable for continued use. Thanks.
