pinging on 3.4l taco

i have a 2001 3.4l 4x4 xcab 5spd.

anyways, i am getting quite a bit of pinging. I notice if I use 89 then there is not as much pining... but its still there....... any ideas??

do the 3.4l usually ping a little?

thanks

Is it supercharged? any other mods?...try using a higher grade of gas.

Yeah... pinging is never "normal"...

Any chance that you changed your plugs to the "wrong" ones? Maybe something hotter?

Like InFlames asked, are you supercharged? Is there anything else that you've done to your engine - or not done! (dirty air/fuel filter, deckplate mod, ISR mod, ECT mod, etc...)

My 98 pings. More lately than normal. I wonder if the gas is getting cheaper? I didn't have many problems with 87 octance before

Last tank I bit the bullet and filled up with 89 octane. Much, much less pinging. It runs much better and smoother too. I guess I just start feeding it 89 at 2.09 a gallon

if your fix is using 89 octane, then try alternating between 89 and 87 each fill-up from about 1/2 tank. see if the minor increase from 87 to about 88 reduces it. it could save you a few bucks.

I would check your MAF sensor. It's probably dirty.

Running 89 is not a fix. Use it until you can properly diagnose the problem and fix it. Don't just settle for it.

Could also be clogged injectors and/or a dirty combustion chamber. Run some Redline SI-1 thru your tank. Best fuel system treatment ever. You'll find it at good, performance oriented auto parts stores.

Peace.

With mine I know I have cleaned the MAF, did the seafoam thing and all but I still get the pinging. I do have a problem with a rough idle and I wonder if it's connected?

I see you did the deckplate mod... does the pinging get better/worse with the deckplate in/out? If it changes, then that can help diagnose the problem.

I can't say I know. I did that over a year ago and never put the plug back in. I liked the power too much. That's an interesting idea though. Maybe I should try and put it in and find out.
