picture request from a 1999 or 2000 owner (some minor disassembly required!)

(pretty please w/ sugar on top!)

to anyone w/ a 99 or 00 4runner:

in order to do my cupholder mod, i need to offset my 98 ebrake assembly towards the passenger side (to the right) by a few inches.

i took off my center console and it looks like the ebrake is attached to a bracket. that e-brake assembly in turn sits in a metal "tub" (for lack of a better word). That tub sits in a hole in the floor of the 4runner. The parts described above is held together by 4 10mm bolts. Once you remove this and push it out of the way, you can actually look down and see the driveshaft.

My question and request for anyone w/ a 99 or 00 4unner: Can you unscrew/remove your center console and take a pic of your e-brake assembly? I want to see what it looks like.

To remove the center console, empty out the contents of your center console compartment (the one that has the latching lid---the arm rest), and unscrew the 2 10mm bolts. You'll need a rachet extension to do this.

Also, there are two philips head screws at the front part of the center console, located on the sides. Push both seats back and remove screws.

You can then lift the entire center console out.

Once done, I would greatly appreciate it if you can either email me a pic or post it in this thread.

GRACIAS to anyone who can help me here!

Thanks,
Bob

HBoss:

Have you ever had a cup of coffee in your stupid cupholder, gone over a bump and have it splash on your lap, knee or shifter? As you can tell, this has happened to me and that is why I am so obsessed about modifying the 99 cupholder/center console into my 98.

I have all the parts right now but I discovered last nite that the cetner console that I bought is cut for a rear heater-equipped 4runner. Thus I have an extra part here and am now waiting to get the correct part from Partznet. That will be by Wednesday.

In the meantime, I gotta figure out how to move the e-brake assembly over. And the best way is of course to get some 99 or 00 owner to take a pic of it.

I know exactly what you mean Bob. My coffee mug has a double-closing lid because of the cheap coffee holder in my 4Runner. In fact, I use the rear one more than I do the front because it's more stable. I hate coffee stains on my gearshift/4x4-lever area.

Hot damn, Brian. Thanks a million! I really appreciate all the pics you took. I'm going to take a pic of mine too but from looking at your 99 as compared to my 98, it just looks like the mount that the ebrake sits on angles the lever to the right instead of the center (circled in yellow):

I might have to create new mounts and widen the brake cable hole, but aside from those two things, that might be it.

The little silver part behind the ebrake looks identical. I checked the part numbers and they are the same too.

Man, I can't wait until the correct center console comes in on Wednesday! I may finish the mod b/f going to Thanksgiving up to SF.

No problemo Bob. I owed ya one anyway. I never thought the ebrake angled right...but my overhead shot with the console one really shows it. I guess hard to tell from the drivers seat. I know you'll come up with something to make it work. Is your shifter surround the same as mine? Or did you order that too? Good luck. You're up late bro...

Knowing Bob, he'll figure it out. If any of those switches need a square hole, the 'nibbler' tool will cut square slugs (3/16"x3/16") very easily through plastic. Drill a 1/4" hole, poke the nibbler in, and snip away. Radio shack has a cheap one...put duct tape on the bottom of the plate, it will scratch...cheap casting I guess. Sounds like this mod is very do-able. Go Bob!

Oh the pressure! Seriously guys, I get my ideas from reading what everyone else has done (or thought of).

Hey Brian, thanks for the tip on the "nibbler" tool. Sounds like a sexual deviant invented and/or named it, but I'm gonna look for it nonetheless! Sounds like a good tool to have. I hope its not too expensive.

Differences

Thanks to butnut, now I have a better understanding of what needs to be done.

First, it appears there are two differences:

1) length of top left bracket "wing" (circled in yellow and red)
2) position of silver thing behind the ebrake

As you can see, the 98 and 99 ebrake is centered in the "tub" but the 99 angles to the right. This is made possible by the longer top left bracket "wing". I suppose I could cut that off and weld a longer piece but I don't wanna go to the welder. Also, it appears that the 99's silver thing (hell, I don't know what to call these parts!) is positioned a little more backwards than the 98 but that might be the angle of the camera.

In anycase, this doesn't seem like a difficult thing to overcome but one never knows until the first hole is drilled!

Back to the drawing board...

Bob
