Pics of my 4runner!

Whats up guys, I'm new to the SUV town. I love toyotas, I used to own a 97 supra twin turbo and a 91 mr2 turbo as well as a 90 supra turbo, and now I have purchased a 97 4runner. Its a 2WD , but its a low mileage beast only 80k miles. Its auto, and I want to see what you guys think of it. The only mods I have on there are a phillips 6000k HID kit, and some clear turn signals in the front. Enjoy!

If you go TT with it, remember who the devil was that put the bug in your ear and drive it to Alabama and take me for a ride under full boost!

If you wanna go 4x4, then do a solid axle swap in the front, since all the ifs stuff has to go anyway.

What mods were on your Supra? I've always wanted one of those, a turbo inline six just sounds so good. Ever seen the Walser supra videos?

Wecome to the board and nice runner! I traded my 90 in for this 97 last week, nearly the twin of yours. You might want to consider a rear locker as a first step, there have been many discussions that favorably compare 2wd with a locker to 4wd with open diffs. If you search 2wd & locker I bet you'll find a bunch of info.

I wouldn't go so far as to say 2wd offroad wont cut it. As someone stated, installing a rear locker will make it alot more capable. I should have my rear locker installed by next week, and I'll be sure to let you guys know how it compares.
Just get some beefier tires, a locker, and a lift, (and momentum )and you'll be going where most 2wd trucks wont dare.
Or you could just go all out like Casey did and make it a 4x4....I would but I dont have the right connections for relatively inexpensive parts and labor. Lucky son of a... hehe.
Maybe someday

wow, thats sick that you have the 7m-gte in your truck. Yea my 97 had just a bpu++. Still good for 432whp, it was auto with a 3800rpm stall and it ran a 12.5@116mph. I'll post some pics of that thing. And tusla i'll check on that locker, I heard about them but never really did any research on it. Whats the difference with that locker? Oh and i also put a pic of the last toyota I had, 91 Mr2 turbo. Enjoy

Here's a recent post about a locked 2wd vs open 4wd
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/show...ght=locker+2wd
basically it's a variety of options, from limited slip to selectable full lockers. There's a lot of debate about how well a locked 2wd compares to a 4wd with open diffs, buts it's certainly a cheaper way to try out offroading & see if you want to invest in a 4wd or doing a 2wd to 4wd conversion. Of course, even with your rig stock there's a lot of places you can take it. No need to start spending money on mods right away, if you stick around here long enough you'll spend plenty $$$$.

You've owned two of my most favorite cars of all time- Supra TT and MR2 Turbo. Man those are sweet cars.

About that Supra;what mods did you exactly have to hit 432whp?

well the mods are pretty simple for the 4th gen. BPU= intake, exhaust, downpipe, boost controller, fuel cut defenser. Then the +'s are either intercooler, cam gear, fuel controller. If you have all these parts, on a 6spd you can get around 430-460whp. But you have to run race gas after 17psi, because the turbo's just blow hot air. I just had the intake, exhaust, downpipe, boost controller, fuel cut, intercooler, and cam gear, plus my stall converter, that got me that number. They are very simple to mod, plus they have these incredible numbers that can reach with hp.

My friend laid down 432 to the wheels without the IC but that was with ideal conditions and I have another friend with a similar setup plus the IC and laid down 447whp both at 17psi.
Thay've both laid down 1/4 mile times in the 12.6 range with drag radials up here at 5800ft asl.

The guy who had the '97 ditched the twins in favor of a T66 single setup plus more than a few other mods and put 626 horses to the pavement (101 octane and 26psi of boost on the stock internals) and nailed an 11.4@124mph with a soft launch up here at our mile high and plus some dragstrip;that would be an easy 10 second 1/4 mile at sea level with a fully streetable car.

I love factory turbo cars, especially Supras.

Why oh why did you sell the Supra and MR2!?!? I could never part with my All-Trac, I am going to be buried in that thing when I die!!

well, its not cheap to modify and maintain these cars. Going fast I think is a disease, and I spent a lot of my time and money in it. I think, i'm old enough to realize whats important now. I will always love the thrill, the power, the speed. But one thing for sure, I dont think I can ever give this thing up. So when i'm 60 and about to retire, I might just go through the classics and find that rare 93.5 supra twin turbo that is all original, and slap a single turbo on it and watch my pulse.

I hear ya. As you know those 3SGTE engines are expensive to maintain and upgrade.
