What would I do with 99 aluminum rims with the clear chipping off them.
Just sand it out (feather) like I would paint around bodyfiller ?

Thanks,

I just picked up some 97 4Runner rims (3 split spoke) for really cheap and the clear coat is peeling off, too. I am going to go at it with some sand paper and get all of that off.

Then I'm going to hit it with some black paint and clear coat.

i like to use this stuff to get the old flaking clear off first:

then you can scuff the bare metal, prime and paint as Duplicolor recommends.

My problem with painting the wheels is always geared towards the balancing which I do 2-3 times a year. And what if you need new tires?
Surely the paint is toast after a new tire and balancing....right?
What about the metal lug nuts ? leave em metal?

Plus....I always like satin black but how does the paint react with all the colored clay heavy muds out here in the west. I've seen the clay discolor satin black.
GLoss has a more protective finish.
Thats my fear with herculiner on the outside of the vehicle.
That mud will fill the krinkled surface and discolor the coating.
Then your whole vehicle becomes a major touch up project.

I'm thinking this winter might be when I turn chrome to black on my runner and do the wheels but I keep investigating and researching.

I like those old school rims. Keep them! You can get a wire brush and see if it'll come off that way.

As far as balancing and mounting, I have not had too much trouble with mine in the past (painted my track rims black on my old race car). And are you talking about the lug nuts or the wheel weights? I left the lugs unpainted, because the paint would just get tore up anyway, and if you paint the area where it makes contact with the rim, you could run into some issues.

And for the color, I just went flat black. So much easier to touch up and looks better IMO. Never liked the black panty satin. Also, who really cares about your truck getting dirty? Not me. Wash off what you can, and the rest.....I call "character."
