I thought that I would start this thread to give some insight to the PO773 code that reads "shift solenoid E malfunction" I got the CEL a quite a while ago, with no transmission symptoms at all. I did a search here on YT, T4R, TTORA, etc, which didn't return much besides a few people with the same code, but no solution.
Anyway, the battery went dead while I got my new wheels on and I drove her off while my code was cleared. Apparently the computer "forgot" that that solenoid was bad, so instead of using the backup method, the tranny used the bad solenoid and got stuck in third gear. I turned it off, started it back up and shifted directly to 2nd, and drove her to universal transmission (who I highly recommend to anyone in florida). One day and 500 dollars later, I got a new set of shift solenoids!
The first shop that I took it to told me that it would cost $1000, but that they don't recommend it, because the tranny already has over 100k miles, and is on its way out. . I am glad I got a second opinion, because once the tranny expert was done, he told me that my valve body still looked great and that she is good to go for another 100k!

Sounds like you got a pretty good deal on the solenoid replacement. Finding an honest (and good) transmission shop can be like finding an honest (and good) roofer!
Glad you got it fixed!
