optimum shifting points or 22re...
i dont have a tach on this 85 22re so i was wondering what are the optimum shifting points, i shift at:
2nd, 10mph
3rd, 25mph
4th, 40mph
5th, 50mph
i also have 31x10.5x15 size tires, so i dont know what the actual mileage is.

When I had my old 22RE, I shifted like so:
1st to 20
2nd to 30
3rd to 45 (55 when getting on the interstate)
4th to 55 or 60, depending on the speed limit. I usually get up to my cruising speed before going into 5th.
Since you have a tach, I'd say shift between 3000-4000 RPM, with 4000 being only when you need to build power, or get up to speed fast (ie getting on the highway)
I try to stay away from anything over 3500 if possible.
Now with my 3.0 V6, the gears stretch out much further. Not trying to hijack your thread, but just out of curiosity, when do you guys with the 3.0s shift? Figure might as well cover em both in the same thread. Hope this helps ya!

It really depends on the terrain more than what the RPM's are for optimum shift points.
One example that I can think of is a long downhill onramp on a freeway near me. I can usually go from 3rd to 5th without even needing to go to 4th. Because the hill helps to get the truck up to a speed for 5th gear cruising, it isn't always necessary to go to 4th. I could go through 4th, but it is not really necessary.
Likewise, going uphill, I will wind the engine a little higher than usual to get the RPM's in a better spot for continuing up the hill without bogging the engine down.
It can also matter if the engine is fully warmed up or still cold. When it is warmed up, it seems to develop power better than when cold.
There is no optimum shifting point that works for all situations.

My owner's manual says the following:
2nd 15mph
3rd 25mph
4th 40mph
5th 45mph
That is usually where I shift. If I am going downhill then I will shift lower and if i am going up hill or accelerating quickly then I shift higher. If I remember correctly, the following are the maximum speeds from the owner's manual:
1st 27 MPH
2nd 48 MPH
3rd 72 MPH
4th 96 MPH (I think)
5th is not listed
I am going to try and figure out how off your speedometer is.

I did some calculations using the calculator that ToferUOP posted. It appears that your speedometer will be about 4 or 5 MPH off, meaning if you are going 15 MPH then you are really going about 19 or 20 MPH. Going by the engine sound is probably the best way to know when to shift.

I drive my truck really hard..
1st - 30
2nd - 40...45
3rd - 70...75
4th - 95...100
5th - as far as the floor goes
My speedo just stopped working...and I have no tach...im rollen on 33x12.5's The cool thing bout 22res...you beat em up...and they love ya for it!

I dunno, have yet to upgrade to an SR5 guages....im sure its close to redline...but i do know that it could go higher
In the rain ive got my tires spinning way past 110 in 4th...once i hit 5th though...not enough tourqe to keep em spinning.

I think it can actually hurt mileage to shift to early. the 22RE is meant to run between 3 and 4,000 rpm most efficiently. 4 Cyl's need to spin faster than 6's or 8's esepcially the later 22re's with the shorter stroke. The longer stroke 22's might be okay to shift earlier, but I think 3-3,500 is good for efficiencies sake.

If anyone is still interested.. I took my GPS to school today and on the way I found that my I am 10mph off. I have L235.75x15 BFG A/T, I measured them and they are 28" tall.
On the speedometer it says 20mph and the GPS says 29.8, and at 50mph in the truck the GPS read 60-61. It was hard to keep the speed consistant because it was really windy.
BTW, I have a 1994 2WD P/U 22RE.
I also started shifting at 3500-4000 today to try it out, I didn't know that lil engine had the power!
