red is starting only.
blue is starting and deep-cycle; intended for marine use, but will work on autos.
yellow is starting and deep-cycle, too. but more for commercial applications.

personally, i'm getting a bluetop. living right on the ocean i think the marine functionality is a good thing; metal corrodes in no time around here.

so whats the point of getting a red as opposed to the regular batteries. I guess i'm not sure what the deal is with these batteries

technically i think the red tops are the "regular batteries"

blues and yellows are deep-cycle to support lots of accessories/running things without the engine going/draining it down...

Just so happens that since these are gel cell and wont leak you can mount them in any positin, like sideways giving you 4 additional surfaces to use as the bottom of the battery making you ideal moutning location better. As for tought they are all pretty damn tough shock resistant and what not. Making then better than the leakable not so many options in mounting type of liquid acid batteries.

By chance has anyone else run into the issue of total destruction with a new yellow top in your 3rd gen?

As I said before my runner killed a new yellow top in 2 days w/o running any acessories, has anyone had any problems with yellow tops?

The vehicle is irrevilant, the yellow tops are all built the same. Hell a few weeks ago I left my dome light on all night and drained the battery completely. A few hours on the charger and all is welll.
It sounds like your charging system is messed up. Go get your charging system and battery tested, Advance Auto Parts does it for free.

Did that I think it may have been a bad battery but the date stamp on manufacture date was 04. Since then I put my Stock panasonic battery back in and hava had no problems since, but seeing as how the toyota isn't even a selectable option on Optima site I wondered.
