OME Specs...Straight from OME!

Okay, here's a summary of OME's products for our 4Runners:

SHOCK LENGTHS

N86/N86C 539mm (extended) 329mm (compressed)
N91S 470mm (extended) 335mm (compressed)
N91SC 470mm (extended) 335mm (compressed)

SPRING DETAILS

Both the medium and HD coils are the same spring rate, but the HD spring is longer than the medium coil. Instead of changing the spring rate, such as they do for the rear springs, they lengthened the HD spring for the front to help compensate for the additional weight of an aftermarket bumper. Here's the lift provided for each:

Front Springs
- 880 = 1.25-1.5" lift
- 881 = 1.5-1.75" lift (this is if they are on a stock 4Runner)

Rear Springs
- 890 = 2.5-3" lift
- 891 = 3-3.5" lift (this is also for a stock 4Runner)

So, there's the final, accurate details on OME springs and shocks. Now here's some more general information that I also found out from them:

- They don't really recommend using spacers up front due to the increase in potential for warping the springs, quicker sag times, and increased potential for, under full compression, smacking the spring coils together. In addition, the trim packs they offer are really just for evening out side to side height inconsistencies, not for raising height of the vehicle. But, as we all know, they are tirm packs and spacers are the same thing, except trim packs seem to be smaller. They also mention that by adding the spacers inside the spring, it further compresses the spring causing the preload to increase, which also stiffens the ride quality. Furthermore, as we now know thanks to Steve Schaefer and other suspension experts here, the highest top mounted outside of the spring spacer is a revtek 1/4" to keep the top ball joint from hitting the spring under full droop situations.

- I also learned that you can think of lifts this way:
- springs = weight carrying capacity
- shocks = ride quality

So, here's what I'm thinking about running on my setup, which I have a addco front swaybar on, and there's a reason for my madness:

1) OME 881 Front Springs
2) OMEN91SC Front Shocks
3) OMEN86 Rear Shocks
4) OME890 Rear Springs
5) Revtek 1/4" top mount spacer
6) Roger Brown or Revtek Diff Drop Spacer
7) Mastercraft 4-layer 18" rear limiting straps
8) Panhard Drop Bracket by Steve Schaefer

So, that's rear medium coils with firm shocks, because I don't have the rear swaybar, this will help with the body roll, but still not be overstiff like what the 891's would be for a stock 4runner. In the front, since I have the addco swaybar up front with disconnects, I'm going to run the HD coils and comfort shocks, which I'm hoping will feel just like the rear does. The reason I'm going with the HD's up front is obvious. It gives me more height without increased stiffness.

So, I hope this helps folks as much as it did for me. Any comments would be greatly appreciated.

I would do this:

1) OME 881 Front Springs
2) OMEN91SC Front Shocks
3) OMEN86 Rear Shocks
4) OME890 Rear Springs

9) Front sway bar disconnect made by NUKE or Lars Dennert

That front Addco will be the kiss of dealth unless disconnected off-road.

P.S. Why does it say your truck is for sale ???

Let me know what the grand total is (and where you got each part) because that is pretty much exactly what I want for mine....

I forgot to add the discos to the list. Thanks for the correction. I placed my order with Lars yesterday for them.

Steve, I'm glad you have your approval. I've probably already asked this of you, along with a million other things, but have you run both the downeys and 890's before? If not, has anyone else, because that's really the only iffy thing at this point, although I'm steering towards the OME's because they will probably net more lift.

Chris,

Great post. From what I remember looking at OME stuff for the front, they only had one set up of shocks/springs listed for my '98, I don't remember what the combo was, but it seemed like OME options for the front end were pretty limited. Do you know if that is true or not?

Actually, I'm pretty sure this is the final list to be ordered tonight or tomorrow, but I sure wish I knew where Mike at Xtreme Off-Road was, because I think he's out of town. But here it is:

1) OME 881 Front Springs
2) OMEN91SC Front Shocks
3) OMEN86 Rear Shocks
4) OME890 Rear Springs
5) Revtek 1/4" top mount spacer
6) Roger Brown or Revtek Diff Drop Spacer
7) Mastercraft 4-layer 18" rear limiting straps
8) Panhard Drop Bracket by Steve Schaefer
9) Front sway bar disconnects made by Lars Dennert
10) Roger Brown 1" body lift

Do you guys think I'll rub with the 285/75R16 Revos with this setup?

I think the comfort shocks were on backorder at one point....maybe that was it

You can run the 880's or 881's on your '98 with either the comfort or HD shocks. I'm choosing to go with the 881's up front, because the spring rate is the same as the 880's, but they are longer. I'm choosing the comfort shocks up front, because I'm running the Addco swaybar up front. In the rear, on the other hand, I'm running the firm shocks to help compensate for not running the addco in the rear due to no discos available and loss of flex the addcos give.

so what would you say the best set-up for me would be? If i don't have the stock swabar up front, I want a level ride, in front and in back, I don't plan on adding a tjm or arb or anything, but I also want not a total soft ride, but a comfortable ride with good off-road capabilities?

The only thing I would change is instead of the comfort shocks up front, I would run the firm shocks up front to compensate for not having the addco swaybar up there. Other than that, everything would be the same!

I think you and I are looking for the same thing.

Actually the only thing wrong with that list is that I didn't mean the 881's, which are the mediums. I meant the 882's HD's for up front. Sorry!

Well, here's the list of each part and the price, mostly off Mike's site, Roger Brown's site, and Steve Schaefer's site:

1) OME 882 Front Springs $124.84/pair
2) OMEN91SC Front Shocks $183.82/pair
3) OMEN86 Rear Shocks $131.08/pair
4) OME890 Rear Springs $124.84/pair
5) Revtek 1/4" top mount spacer w/ bolts $78.00
6) Roger Brown or Revtek Diff Drop Spacer $25.00
7) Mastercraft 4-layer 18" rear limiting straps $69.90
8) Panhard Drop Bracket by Steve Schaefer $84.62
9) Lars discos $80.00
10) Roger Brown 1" body lift $108.00

For a total of (drum roll) = $1010.10 w/o shipping WOWSER! Why'd you guys make me do that?

DON'T GET 882's!!!!!!

Chris,

Absolutely do not get 882's!!! Mertztr already went through a huge fiasco with those springs, they're designed for a vehicle with an aftermarket bumper and winch, and without those, you will definitely trash your CV joints. Refer to the following thread for all the gory details:

https://www.yotatech.com/forums/show...&highlight=OME

This is the link where he first noticed problems:

Definately go with the firm shocks. They do not have a lot of resistance to compression, but do control rebound very nicely that will give you nice control on and off the road.

You should install and leave connected the stock rear swaybar.

I have a set of front OME Med Coils that I only had on for a few weeks before I changed over to the SAWs. I can make you a deal on them if you want.

Of course, you may really want to consider just getting the SAWs for the front now so you will not have to upgrade later...

I agree with Gadget..go with the SAW's now if you and save some money down the raod when you decide that the OME's are not what you want. I had front and rear OME's and once I got my SAW's it was like a night and day change. The ride, IMO, was allot smoother and controlled. But it all comes down to your personal taste and the big factor.....$$$$. Your choice. just wanted to give my $.02

Great first post, but I too am with gadget. I had a ome/bilstein setup all around and I noticed a SLIGHT (no spacers etc) in the front even before I up the TJM on. I'll take some pics to show you how much its sagging now I wasn't planning on getting a bull bar for a while until the group buy came around and now my front end is sagging like crazy. Luckily 44Runner had some Adjustable downeys for sale and I picked them up. I would say just go with the adjustable coilovers from the start. I will soon have my front setup for sale as well if anyone is still interested. You don't want to end up like mertzr... with the adjustables you can just let it down a bit til you get a diff drop in or figure out whats going on. Its just not fun to pay someone $150 each time you want to change something out. Unless your lucky and have a friend with a wall mounted spring compressor. Anyway, good luck on your lifting! You guys might want to try and wait and ask mike if you could do a group buy. For atleast the shocks/springs. Just a thought.

Personally, I can't beleive that when OME says the max lift that would be achieved from using the OME882's is 2", and this other guy got 3.5", how this would be possible. That's a large difference which leads me to beleive that the springs were messed up and too long or something.

On another note, I'd love to get the SAWS, but it's almost double the money.
