OK. I'm shopping for third gens
here are my current options
option1
option 2
option 3
option 4 i know a v4 doesnt exist
that's what i have so far. If anybody wants to help me on my search, here is what i am looking for
third generation 4runner.
MUST be a 4x4
MUST be automatic
2.7 or 3.4 doesnt matter, would prefer 3.4
must be $11k or under... i would need to talk them down to about 10500
i would really like the nicer alloy rims as see in option 1 versus option 4
color doesnt matter
not toooo many miles... under 130
help! thanks!

Go option 1
Option 2 - cheap aftermarket wheels
Option 3 - limited - a close second
Option 4 - what are you nuts? (j/k)
Just my opinion. Option 3 would be my second choice.

Dude, option 1 is the best in my opinion. It's got some miles on it, but I'd go with that or option 3. You could probably get them down to around $9000. Spend the rest on mods.

well i gotta agree, 1 and 3 look good to me. 4 has just gone to hell. but 2... i kinda like it too. maybe it's just those fender flares that are swaying me. it'd be cool to have the limited one.
#1 says it's been really well taken care of, so that should count for something. if #3 is in perfect order tho, i'd go for it.

i like the black fender flares the best. then i like # 3's fender flares (the silver ones), then i like the chrome ones
the chrome ones would be best for offroading as the wouldnt get damaged as easily, correct?
i love the black ones

Number 2 just looks kind of, well, blah. I dunno, those wheels aren't really to my liking, and it has the standard grey bumpers. I dig the other ones. Unless, of course, you get the black rockcrawler wheels. That would be tight. I still say number 1. Just my .02.

# 1 looks the best maintained. They don't mention which tranny it has or if it has sunroof and other options. It looks like a well equipped SR5. No sag in the back, body is straight, etc. Mileage seems high but what do I know - the best 4Runner I could find in my price range was mine and it had 132k. His price is great and it will move fast. It is somewhat newer so it will have higher resale despite its mileage.
#2 that grillguard is guaranteed to take out your headlights and grill, probably the front bumper too in a collision. I don't care for the wheels (from what I can see) and judging by the non-chrome bumpers it probably doesn't have many options.
#3 not bad. A close second. An older limited but it will come fully loaded with everything. It has miles on it but if all the maintenance has been done there shouldn't be any problems. Limiteds have good resale. I dunno if I would want all that plastic cladding on the sides for a trail rig although it looks nice.
#4 is a 4 banger 2wd. Isn't that why you don't want your 2nd gen? No power and no 4wd?
If you are buying from a private seller ask for all the records. A good owner will keep service records and receipts or at least be able to tell you what work has been done and at what mileage by memory. Ask about everything: timing belt, water pump, alternator, battery, brakes, a/c, etc. Whoever owned my truck took very good care of it - only Toyota replacement alternator and other parts. Only neglect was the suspension which I took care of.

I LOVE my sunroof. Open sky early in the mornin', closed and shady by afternoon. I've seen a couple of posts here by individuals who had problems with their sunroof but mine's tight.
I also like the power accessories. I haul dogs so it's nice to roll their windows up and down from the front seat.
My wife actually taked me into getting ours. I had pretty much ruled it off the list. It was a Limited, leather seats etc. But really it was exactly what I wanted in a vehicle.
Go for the Limited.
