Oil prefrences for a 3.0 with 111K ( Bought car 5 mnths ago & dont know whats in it)
I was just wondering after reading the last post about oil prefrences and how guys wanted to change there oil. Yea that helped but i dont know whats in the car now so i dont' know what i would be changing from. I was thinking a high mileage oil like castrols but please give me some info on what you guys have tried and liked. thanks

I always use what the previous owner used. In my case it's Castrol on my 88 4Runner. I've never had any problems with engine components wearing out by sticking with the same brand oil. I have seen some people wipe out cams and bearings in a used vehicle when they changed brands of oil. I would ask the previous owner if possible.

I'd stick with a good brand of dino. If there is dino in there now, putting synthetic in could cause some leaks, amongst other things. Just stick with a good brand (I ran Pennzoil in my '90 4Runner before I sold it and it's still running strong with 250,000 miles, NO engine work) and change it AND the filter every 3,000-4,000 miles. I also had good results with Castrol.

Amsoil 5w30(ASL). Full Sythethic.
Worry about it 25k miles later.

I've always run Castrol 10w40 dino oil in my truck and been very happy. I'm experimenting with the wife's Highlander. I'm running Mobil 1 in it and changing every 6,000 miles. So far so good.

Ive had good results with just plain ole Castrol GTX. Its kind of pricey for dino oil, but it works well.
Ive been using Mobil Drive Clean 10w-30 in my F-150. Also no problems there. Mobil recently replaced Drive Clean with Clean 5000. I had to change the oil in my truck today and thats what I dumped in. You can definetely tell from the oil's odor that it has a lot more cleaners than the old oil did. It almost smells like laundry detergent. When I first got my F-150, I used Mobil in it because it was an inexpensive oil that had a good reputation. Ive stuck with it for 3 years now with no problems. Ive thought about going back to using Castrol (used it in my Toyotas, no problems after 250,000 miles) but I guess I dont want to deal with oil problems caused by mixing brands. I plan on running Mobil in the F-150 untill it has 200,000 miles on it. At that point, I will be either selling it or trading it in on a used Tundra. At that point, I will go back to using Castrol.
I started using Castrol back in '99 when I bought a '91 4Runner SR5 V6. I learned that the previous owner was a doctor who always had the service done at her dealership. At that time, the Toyota dealer was using Castrol, and that vehicle had gotten Castrol all of it's life, so thats what I used. I had no problems with it and Ive found that a lot of Toyota owners swear by Castrol. Thats good enough for me...
