Oh upper rear shock mount let me count the ways I Hate you!

Well SOB if this problem didnt' come back to bite me in the backside. When I installed my lift over 2 years ago I tightened everything down tight. A couple months back I heard a thump sound and notice some crappy handling characteristics after the noise. I looked and sure neought the shock pulled itself through the hole in the mount, the rubber had been destroyed and was no longer present. I replaced the rubber and used a new washer. I tightened it down and it worked until last week. Now it has made the hole quite a bit larger than it should be and even with it all the way tightened it is still loose. I though of havinf a shop cut and re-weld a new mounting spot (same place). Perhaps using a adapter and switching to shocks with and eye instead of a pin. I don't know but I've got some mileage trips coming up with wheeling involved and this crap need to get fixed and fast.

Dude,
Its allways the little bull Shi* stuff that pisses me off aswell...Isnt' it Always the seemingly small stuff that turn into big expensive issues?

the cheap fix would be to weld an appropriate sized thick washer where the shock mounts

my vote goes for new shock mounts, like what downey, all pro, marlin, or WabFab offer. That way you wouldn't ever run into the problem again.

I don't understand why Toyota made them such a PITA. Too bad they didn't make the mounts like the Tacoma's. Would've been much easier. SOAZ on here and ExPo also had his snap from the nut coming loose.

the obvious choice is to cut out your rear suspension and remove the axle and replaced with a 4-linked diamond axle and call it a day

on the serious note, welding in a washer would work but i'd be afraid of that popping loose too. the more expensive but dependable fix would be a whole new mount like what was suggested.

Well,I guess you have a couple of options,w/o welding/redesighning the rear shock mounts.

You could easilly use a few stacked washers,to tighten up the buishing mount so that its tight....If its tight enough it will not rattle around inside the shock mounting hole.

...from shock towards body:shock-couple of heavy washers-lower bushing washer-buishing-frame-buishing-upper buishing washer-nylon lock nut w/loctite

or

from shock: shock-lower buishing washer-buishing-sleve(cut an aftermarket swaybar link sleve, just big enough to fit inside body shock mounting hole, and thin, like 1/4" long)-buishing-upper bushing washer-nylon nut w/loctite-tighten it untill the rubber bushings over compress the sleve for a tight hold.

I going to have a look at mine when I install the Billies. Could be the time to plate the eyes too.

I think I'll get some dimensions and order the new eye bits from someone. I called allpro and theres are lower mount only as they are not designed to be welded flat but now that I Look at it the cup is round ...... they measure 1 1/2 by 2 1/2 for $29 so while these are inexpensive I still have to buy shocks,,,,, fudge.

Tractor has everything home depot and lowes doesn't have. I have found more bizarre stuff there than I ever dreamed. Lets just hope Crolison gives me a p# or something to go on. Not to mention I'll need to order news shocks...

Well tractor here in FL didn't have what I needed, but the 4x4 shop I took it to had some universal axle mount tabs for jeeps, and as we all know if it fits a jeep it will fit ...... in the dumpster. No no I measrued and remeasured and they will work. I will have them weld em on and will replace my FZJ80 shocks with OME 886's (I think) It will be nice to have an eye to eye mount and get rid of that crap they makes me burn myself on the muffler every time I try to tighten it. Not to mention not having to carry a pipe wrench to tighten it with be nice too.
