I use 87. 89 is just a mix of what left over in the pipe lines at the refinery. As for gas in richmond since we are on the south east pipeline you really never know what brand your getting. Its just the mixture and grade. Texico and exxon use the same formulas of gas for 87 and 89. I just stick with 87 because its not a blend of high and low octane fuel.

I generally run 92/93 depending upon what I can get at the station I am at, but I prefer to run 101 or 104 when I am close to home and can get down to the race station. With the 101/104 I can open up my deckplate, even with the supercharger and feel a distinct power increase. When I have 92/93 in, I generally run with the deckplate closed.
I often fill up the aux fuel tank with 104 and use it to "top off" the stock tank filled with 92/93 as the level drops. That combo seems to give me the best mileage and performance.

as i just posted in the other thread...
I normally fill up with Arco 87. I felt like giving my car a treat so i put Chevron 91 in it.. supposidly the best stuff in town. i notice no difference in my car.. still a slow ass 4runner :pat:

Like Dr. Z, up here in the NW we have 87, 89, and 92 octane. I fill up with Pro Power Plus 87 at '76 and have been using the same stuff since i took delivery of my 4Runner. I have only been to 3 different stations, all 76 and I always use the same stuff. I do make long trips, but somehow I always manage to make it to one of those three stations in time... lol. I might have to bring a spare can for my longer trips. I have found though that when you use a consitent type of fuel I have found better performance. After about my 5th or 6th consecutive tank of the same stuff, it started running alot better. Maybee its just me, but it has been seem to work so I will stick with it! I don't have a supercharger, so in the past I have not needed anything higher than 87, but there is not a HUGE difference in price between 87 and 92, so I just might have to start using 92. Also, I will be going into the dealership soon for my 75K mile service. ALSO, I have been noticing that the fuel gauge is pretty funky working... and seems to fluctuate alot. I checked my VIN#, and sure enough I was listed in the range on TSB EL010 . I will be looking forward to getting this fixed when I take it in for my 75K service I hear they check and replace the fuel gauge sender assembly in your fuel tank, and depending on your VIN#, a circuit plate in your dash. So, I will let you know what I think after I get this fixed! Peace.

I don't use anything but 93 octane because of my supercharger. I feel bad for you supercharged guys that can only get 91. I ran 91 in the truck once and it pinged like crazy.

I recently tried 87 to see if there was any difference in performance or gas mileage. I used to use 91 religiously. Well, I haven't noticed a change in either performance or economy with the switch. Doesn't hurt that it's alot cheaper either. BTW, my 2000 JGC requires 87. Anything over and the manual says components will be damaged.

Yes I really am running the sucky 87 octane winter gas. Yes I did the ISR mod and Yes I was part of Dr. Z's "beta test" group to plug the FPR. And nope, no pinging.
But... I'm also running the ECT mod which is letting me run richer, (and also advances the timing a bit), so that might have something to do with it.

The octane number is just a measure of a fuel's resitance to knock. Its really just a scale, isooctane is 100 and heptane is 0. (Both isooctane and heptane and other fuels are blended into gasoline) There is no added energy content from a 87 to 104 octane or any other number. Basically, you should go with the lowest octane you can to avoid pinging. You won't get any of the befefits of a higher octane unless you advance your spark timming. Race/sports cars that require a higher octane need that because their spark timming is more advanced which increases knock.
