octane rating?

I've read and heard that it's a waste of money to put higher octane fuel in your rig, if it doesn't require it. Additives are supposed to be the same for all grades of fuel (as long is the same brand). Truck runs fine on 87

When I had my '90 with the 3.0, I alternated between 87 and 89. But when I new I would be towing, I'd fill up a few times prior with 89 or 91. I noticed a minor difference in performance with the higher octane, but only was interested under heavy loads.
I use 87 in my 2000, but have done little towing since getting it this past summer.

I usually jus get 89 or 87 octane but if i have xtra cash then y not get the more octane when u go to the gas station. On special occasions there's a place by my house i will go to and get 102 octane gasoling but its really freakin expensive (especially now a days).

I used 87 (Colorado formulation) in my '91 forever. I'm currently experimenting with both 87 and 91 in the new rig.
Colorado formulations don't go higher than 91, and get oxygenated in the winter months.

I now us 93 in my Sc'r 2K....But...When I had my 95 I also used 93. Why?
Because on a trip thru the mountains we were using 87 and my W was calling the runner all kind of names because it was continuously hunting in OD and we were on this long up-hill grade.
I decided it was time to change drivers so I asked her to stop at the next station and I filled up with 93.
As it happened we had to drive about 1/2 mile to a station and 1/2 mile back.
I pulled back out onto the highway and and the Runner shifted thru the gears into 4th (OD), and I continued on up the grade. So we used 93 for the rest of the trip.
Then we got home....There's this overpass on I95 that we drive up regularly so I decided to test it. I put 87 in the tank and it would downshift going over the OP. So I tried a couple of tanks of 93. Hmmmmm, no downshift.
Seems like that knock sensor advances the timing till it detects a knock, then backs off to the knock threshold.
Advanced timing mean more power, not necessarily better gas mileage because you will have a tendency to use that power.
Then we took a trip from Fla to NJ and back. Part of the trip we used 87, then finished it with 93. Then we figured cost per mile, not mpg. Cost per mile for the 93 portion of the trip was SLIGHTLY less than the 87 portion. The extra power was a bonus.
I hope this didn't bore you too much....

I also go for the cheapest. Oh the life of a college student.
I did notice some pinging while I was driving around after some punk broke in and stole my stereo (bastard ripped up the whole dash to get it out, and it was only worth about $150)
When i ran it on 89 and 91 the pinging subsided. I guess I have pre-ignition. Time to try some amsoil!!!

Here in greenville, SC we have 92, 93, 95 Sonoco race gas $1.74/gal and 110 Off road race gas- a Whopping $3.99/gal
I try to always use 93 white gas from Amaco, i like running the clean stuff, but when cash is low i use what i can afford.
