How do you re-gear an IFS suspension.
That is what I have up front. I know about the gears in back.
There is still a differential in the middle - it's what comes out of the differential to the wheels that's different.

For that tire size, alot of people go with 4.88's, some go with 5.29's
What is your factory tire size and gear ratio?
Find the percentage size difference of the tires and apply that to the gears to find out what you need.
EX: My truck had 25.5" tall tires from the factory, I have 27" tall tires now.
New tires are 1.06 times bigger.
Factory gears are: 3.73
so 3.73 x 1.06 = 3.95 (theoretical new gear ratio needed)
I put in 4.10's because I've lifted my truck and it's an automatic. It needs all the help it can get.

Hope this helps,
Todd

so it's good to take care of regearing and a locker at the same time? i have 32s now, next time i want 33s, and i was figuring i'd regear then. but i also want to get a rear locker, so would i need to regear tht point or wait until i get the bigger tires too? how does it affect mileage? cost? and whe one regears, does that affect 4wd in hi and lo the same?

If you haven't regeared yet, you will notice a big difference in power (assuming a smaller OEM tire size to start with).
It's generally cheaper to get a locker installed at the same time as the gears. Don't have to "open it up" twice.
Don't know about cost though.
Since this effects the last gear set before the wheels, both high and low range will be effected (for the better!). It gets even better with dual t-cases
Hope this helps,
Todd

Your 2002 has more power than my 3.0 and I run 32's also. I'd get the 4.88's when you go to 33 and start saving up for some lockers.

Mine runs fine with the stock 4.10's. I thought about going to 4.88's but I would rather wait until I install the arb air locker that I intend to buy so I can tackle both biotches in the same snap. But since I haven't really seen much power loss I think I might just leave it at 4.10 since I 4wheel all the time I would have to do both fore and aft at the same time, $$. If I happen to come upon a good deal on gears and master install kits by the time I get my air lockers then I will do it. I also gradually went to 33's. I mean I started out stock with 265/70's then two years later put on 265/75's and then two years later went to 285/75's, so the power loss was not very noticeable to me. So the power loss going from 265/70's to 285/75's like you did would probably be noticeable. I don't think you absolutely positively have to change gears but if you have the extra cash to do it then I would go to either 4.56 or 4.88 if you don't wheel or tow much or 4.88 or 5.29 if you do wheel or tow alot. hope that helps, eventually I will go to 4.88's though.
