No overdrive - CEL code
My 01 4Runner stopped shifting into overdrive. It shifts into 1,2,3 just fine. I received an P0755 code for Solenoid B. I have replaced the solenoid and no luck! I have been doing everything in my power to diagnose this and I am hoping to have a very informative post for anyone else in my situation. The last thing I have tried is unplugging the connection to my solenoids on the rear of my transmission to force manual shift mode. While driving in manual shift mode there is no difference between 2 (3rd) and D (OD) until I let go of the throttle. At 50mph while in 2, rpms will drop to 1500 when I let off the throttle. While in D, rpms will drop to 1000.

Literally, the exact same situation happened to me this week with the same code P0755. I also replaced Solenoid B and no luck. It pretty much took me the entire afternoon getting to that Solenoid. I haven't taken it to my dealer because when I called they said they don't fix these problems, they only replace the transmission.
Some additional background - 2001 4runner (A340F tranny) has 107,000 miles, my tranny has had it's regular services, but when I took down the pan today, the magnets were full of metal filings and I could see some metal filings on the filter. Fluid looked kind of dark considering the last flush was "supposed" to have been 17k ago by the dealer. Cleaned the pan and magnets, installed the new solenoid and put everything back together.

the no2 solneoid is in the rear of the valve body assy by its self the lock sole\neiod and no1 are on the side, the front one is lock up. the no2 is for 3-4 shifting since you replacede 1 of them hope it was the right one, since the problem persists it could be debris in valve body or damage to wire harness. try a good trans flush at shop with fluid exchange and then test wires. p/m me if i can help more as well as let me know how it goes

Thanks for the advice. Wish I posted first and asked before doing all the work. I replaced shift solenoid valve s2 only. I didn't realize that shift solenoid valve s1 and s2 together meant solenoid B. (Part person at the dealer wasn't much help b/c they've never ordered this part before.)
I'll go get a good trans flush and hope it clears out the debris and also have them check the wires. If I still get a code, then I'll replace solenoid valve s1.
I'll post an update when this is performed, unfortunately I'm going out of town in a few days so it may be a while.

I have a 2001 4Runner Ltd, V6, with the A340F Tranny. I can confirm the A340F designation as it matches the designation on the door. Also, the picture matched perfectly with what I saw when I had the pan off.
Does Solenoid B mean both shift solenoid valve s1 and s2?

Thanks for the reply. I think in the end, I may have to do that. I'm going to get the transmission power flushed and hope that works. Will post my results in a few weeks when I get back in town. Luckily, I have an alternative car to get me around until then.

Indy shop says there is an "internal issue" and recommends installation of a rebuilt transmission. They said that each solenoid checks out and that the problem is not electrical but mechanical. Price for replacement is approx $3500 for Toyota rebuilt, or $4000 for 3rd party.
Suggestions? Advice?

If anyone's following this thread, I'm going to bite the bullet and have the transmission rebuilt. I'll report back as to the problem.
Also, the rear axle seal is leaking again....14k after it was last replaced. Work order before for the leaking rear axle was just seal. This time seal, bearings, retainers are all being replaced. (plus leaked on shoes, etc).
The only consolation I have is that after all this, it'll still be cheaper to maintain the 4runner than my black hole of a money pit, e46 M3.

So I brought the 4runner to a second shop for a second opinion. I've already switched the shift solenoid 2 with a new one. The 2nd shop spent a few days and thought it was an ECU issue. Now they think it's a solenoid issue. They said they dropped the pan and "tested" the solenoids and decided that one of them were bad. I then informed them that shift solenoid 2 had been replaced. After a pause on the phone line, they said they'd retest them. I think they never tested the solenoids but just followed the service manual for a P0755 code. After the next phone call, they said that the new solenoid was indeed bad and they replaced the solenoids and that the 4runner now engages Overdrive but after driving for about 10 minutes, it would not stay in OD. They tried to explain that b/c once the transmission "warmed up", it would not stay in OD. My understanding is that the transmission would not engage OD if it doesn't reach about 95 degrees F or something like that, but I've never heard of losing OD after warming up.
At this point they want to do a full rebuild. Any thoughts? Ever heard of this situation?
