Newbie seeking advice on '88 runner 22re rebuild.

Hello all...

My dad has an '88 4Runner, 22RE, 5spd, 250K. He is currently looking into rebuilding the engine, and adding a few bolt-on upgrades to increase power.

Two questions:

Can anybody reccomend a good shop in TX, preferably one that specializes in Toys?

What upgrades should he be considering? He is currently looking at a Downey header, high-flow exhaust, and either an Airaid or K&N filtercharger system for intake. Are there any other light mods he should consider?

This rig sees light trail duty+daily driver+work truck which invovles some light towing. Nothing too extreme. He's running 31x10.50 BFG AT's.

Thanks in advance for any info/suggestions y'all could give me.

id keep the stock airbox, umm when i had my toy i had a LC engineering header those guys specialize in all aspects of toyota motors and was really happy with it. We also put new pistons and rings, and borred out some when we rebuilt the top end of my truck.

Hey 4StringSlinger,

I'm in the same boat as your Dad. I have 300K on my '88 4Runner, and even though it still runs pretty well, I know the time is near when I'll need a new motor. This is my only vehicle and it has to be reliable. I plan to go with a "remanufactured" engine opposed to a rebuild. As I understand it, many more new parts are used when they remanufacture an engine. With rebuilding, only the badly worn parts are replaced. Someone else might elaborate on this.
The suppliers of 22RE engines that I'm aware of are:
LC Engineering - expensive ($3500+ for 135hp high performance) and no warranty (wtf?, I'm not a racer)
Jasper Engines and Transmissions - better price ($2000 standard engine) and 3 year warranty.
High-Performance-Engines.com - better price ($1895 for 125hp high performance) and 1 year warranty.
I'm tempted to go with the Jasper and eventually bolt on performance upgrades. I like the warranty and they have been around for a long time.
I'm open to suggestions as well.

depending on where you live, you can get a 22re motor and trani for around 3k. The motor with 30k or so miles and trani with around the same mileage. I know a place called diablo motorsports in Dublin California, pretty good guys down there.

you could also do just a complete rebuild. Replacing everything, honing the cylinders, rebuilding the head, and all that jazz.

just depends on how much you wanna pay and how much work you would like to do. When i did mine, my dad and i were on a weekend only working basis, so it took us around 7-8 weeks to do it all.

as far as intakes are concerned, the best way to go is custom, i made an adaptor for the maf to elimanate the stock airbox. it took quite a bit of work, but was well worth the gain if you want to know more about it, just send me a message, have pictures too

Call me crazy, but I am thinking that after five years and three months he's got his issues ironed out.
