I am new to the site, and I love the info that is posted about th3 3rd Gen 4Runners. I have a 2002 Sport that I am considering lifting. I have some questions about rim size and offset. I saw in the thread a post about 265/75/16 being the largest tire size without rubbing. I am currently running a 275/70/16 Revo with only a 1" rear spacer for leveling, and there is no rubbing. I want to step up to the 285/75/16 BFG's with the stock Sport wheels. Is this possible? This is a daily driver that sees a lot of interstate driving. It is also used for occational hunting trips, but nothing extreme. Would the 285's rub the upper arm? I can handle the trimming of the firewall and plastic, if that is the problem. I had a set of 265's on a stock 1997 SR% 4Runner with no rubbing, but I realize that the 2002 sits lower from the factory. This is my first venture into lifting an IFS truck, my past experience is with my CJ-7 and '85 toy flatbed. Thanks for the help. Scott

cujeeprs, welcome to yotatech and you are in my neck of the woods,, best thing to do is search but ill try to answer your question.

with stock wheels they are 16x7, and 285 bfgs may or may not rub the upper a arms but the risk is you need to get some wheel spacers, get custom upper a arms or shaved a arms. Or you need some cheep (pro comp alloy comes to mind) 16x8 either 4.5 backspaced or 4 inch backspacing.

having the Blue Tokicos on for a little while now, what do you think of them? Have you wheeled them yet?

haven't wheeled them yet. they're soft on the road - very VERY plush.

having read through this whole post, I'm grateful for all the research and testing that has been done.

I just bought my 2001 4Runner and have a line on a set of LC springs and have found a local pair of Tundra TRD front springs.

Just to clarify, and I know the answer, but you CANNOT use the Tundra shocks (front or back), is that correct? (I have to ask because I could get the complete Tundra setup for $120, assembled front springs/shocks and rear shocks - TRD Bilsteins.

Thanks,

Jeff, new Tucson 4Runner owner.

you could use the fronts if you swapped out the top plates for the correct ones, but you don't want to - they're too stiff. you can't use the rears - different upper mount.

thanks Andy. The fronts I got but the shocks are Tokico, so this wasn't a TRD. The paint code on the springs are two red and two pink .. Any idea which side the red goes on, and which side the pink goes?

Thanks again,

Jeff

And do you think Tacoma stock Tokico would be alright? Any idea on shock length?

Sorry for all the questions, just didn't see this particular setup addressed.

honestly, the tokico's for the tundra might be OK. you need to check the extended length. i've never seen that paint code on the coils though. are you SURE they're from a TRD tundra and not some type of tacoma?

I was told it was an 03 Tundra, 4wd. So, I'm not sure what they are from exactly. I'll compare them to my 4Runner setup and also get the numbers off the shocks. I may have wasted $75, but it was a great deal if I didn't waste it ...

Thanks,

Jeff

well, i'm thinking that they're NON TRD since they're not a color combination that we've seen before. also, they could be 2WD, which are basically equivalent to stock runner coils - just a tad stiffer.

you really NEED the TRD coils to make this work the way it's supposed to. they're progressive rate, and are soft on the road. the NON-TRD coils are NOT progressive and have a constant spring rate for the entire travel of the coil.

do it right. get what you KNOW works - the TRD coils.

Hey Andy, after reading this thread for the third time, I found one of the color combos of my springs - Red/Red that you found above, the other one is two pink or light purple/lavender.

I also have the Tokico part number on the shocks: red/red spring has 030620B on the shock body, pink/pink has 030627A.

I have a friend with a Tundra double cab and will try to look at his setup next time I see him, but so far I've had no luck finding those part numbers on the web (no surprise since I'm sure it is a Toyota only spec).

Does anybody have any additional insight? (I'm guessing I have 4wd, non-TRD springs/shocks).

I don't know if this will just add confusion, but while searching for a deal on used TRD Tundra coils, I found some interesting info. At Car-part.com, if you search for Tundra coils, a pop up comes up that will list about 20 different variations. On the bottom of the pop up it has lengths for the double cabs with one being measured at 369 mm and I think the shorter being 358. It also had a description of "w/US mkt" and "w/o US mkt" so I guess the US mkt might be different?
I also found that most yard will just use the first category as the default to put their part in, so it will still take some legwork and phone calls to get the right part. Buying new might just be worth it!

Here's the list of coils from car-part.com. I am not sure what US mkt means, but there is a difference in length between the springs which might explain some slight difference in height between one setup and another.

Reviving this thread yet again....

Jefoto - Did you ever proceed or find anything out about the Tundra shocks?

I'm looking for other shock uptions for the front besides the Tokico blue and the Tokico greens seem to be sold out.

thanks
John

I have been doing the shock hunt as well and i posted what i found here. I will be trying something new and going with the Monroe Reflex shocks. The guys over at Monroe said that they are stiffer than stock and should be perfect for my application. Also as you can see from the info in the thread, they are not long enough to give us droop problems!:

Anybody know the part number for these Heavy Duty Black Tokico shocks?

Hate to beat a dead horse..

But it seems most people are using 4wd TRD Tundras with a top plate spacer? My head is literally hurting from trying to dig out info from all the threads! What about 2wd TRD Tundras? I'm looking for one to use without a spacer to pair with OME 906's in the rear.

I've got a set of Trekmasters to go with these, so would these not really be ideal for TRD Tundras? I'm looking for ride height similar, but not more than, an OME 881.

I had the trekmasters - and blew one out just going over a whoop-dee-do a little fast - really never liked those shocks... on the other hand I switched to the Bilstien 5125 adjustable shocks from Sonoran Steel - which meant I didn't need the spacer anymore to add lift with my tundra coils- and these shock are awesome!!! I would recommend going with the Bilstien's vs trekmasters 100 times over.

Is Steve selling the shocks separately now? The last time I looked into buying them, and its been awhile, he only sold them with his kits.
