Ok, after a long trip to Hoover Toyota at Lunch, here's what I found...

They had quite a few Tundra's on the lot, most of them new (04/05). For 2004/05 2WD TRD Access Cab, the coil springs were Red/Yellow and Purple/Yellow. For 2005 4WD TRD Access Cab, the coil springs were Blue/Orange and Blue/Red. Fo a 2004 4WD NON TRD Double Cab Limited, the coil springs were Orange/Green and Red/Red.

[RANT ON: bamachem]Now if you'll notice above, I have installed the TRD 2WD Springs! ˟˟˟˟! Why the hell can't you get what is advertised on eBay?!?!?! Well, what I DO know is that they are a better ride and did give me the lift I was looking for, but DAMMIT, the guy supposedly went into his local Toyota Dealer and ordered '03 4WD Tundra TRD coils and either the parts guy ordered the wrong ones (could easily happen) or this guy screwed me over and knew he was selling TRD 2WD springs and NOT 4WD TRD springs like he advertised.

Now to be fair, IF THIS IS IN FACT TRUE, then the springs should be easy to get over on tundrasolutions since all the 2WD guys are putting 4WD springs on to level out their Tundras, leaving the 2WD springs to us.[/RANT]

Well, that didn't help me any, so I went inside and chatted about 15 min w/ the parts guru there. This isn't your typical parts guy. This guy has been there for years and really knows his ˟˟˟˟ and has ALWAYS cheerfully helped me find what I'm looking for on my qwirky projects. He pulls up the same 2 pages of coil springs on his screen and comes to the same conclusion that we've had from the beginning. The dealer's deal in part numbers. The only people who deal in binary paint codes is the factory. The dealers don't have access to that info.

Well, since I'm hardheaded as they come, I didn't give up. I called 1-800-GO-TOYOTA and talked w/ a Customer Service rep. The lady I got said "Sure, I can get that info for you. Now what color is your Tundra?" She thought I was talking about VEHICLE Color even though I specifically said COIL SPRING at least 4 times in our conversation. Well, turns out they don't have that information either, but TRD would have it.

So, of course I called TRD at 1-800-688-5912 and asked the same question and got quite a shocking response. The guy on the other end said they don't make Coil Springs and they don't have ANYTHING to do w/ the TRD packages on the trucks. Now isn't that funny, Toyota calls it a TRD package and TRD doesn't have anything to do with it. Isn't that called "Fraud" and covered in Business 101 class? Anyway, they couldn't help at all since it was a Toyota Part and NOT a TRD part.

Back to 1-800-GO TOYOTA... I got the information for the plant in Princeton, IN that makes the Tundras and called them at 1-812-387-2000 and asked to speak with an Engineer that would have technical info on Tundra Front Suspensions. No dice. I was told THREE TIMES "I'm sorry sir, but the engineers are all out on the production line and cannot take a call at this time." This lady was persistant, but I was MORE persistant and she eventually transferred me to Public Relations since she refused to provide me with an office phone number or email address of one of the Engineers that could help me.

The Public Relations lady was very nice and cordial (as you would imagine) and took all my info down including phone number and email address and promised that someone would contact me about my question concerning the availability of a reference chart for the binary color coding on Tundra front coil springs.

We'll see... I'll keep you posted.

I posted over on TundraSolutions.com and asked for a "roll call" of Tundra TRD owners to post their color codes. So far, it looks like 2000-2004 Tundra Access Cab TRD 4WD are Drivers Side: Yellow/Yellow, & Pass Side: Lt Blue/Yellow.

I have the af090/af100 coils on order, and I'll let you know the colors for them as soon as they come. This brings us back to the conflicting info about these coils being from the 2wd or 4wd that was found whiile coil shopping online. If my coils do indeed come with the 4x4 coloring, I wonder what kind of results I'll get? This is VERY interesting. Not all bad news, but very interesting. Your setup works with those parts, but I question the connection between your part numbers and the actual coil's you're using.

So do you think the coils you have are the ones in the part numbers?

Like you said, maybe the 2WD ones are the right ones for us.

At this point, read my sig line: "WTHKWF" are the coils I'm running. I know they work, but to be duplicated, I MUST verify the part number using the binary color chart, but that is ONLY used at the plant in Indiana and dealers DO NOT have access to that info.

Well, if you think about it, the front Differential and CV Axles weigh about 250#. With coil springs that are ~475#/in spring rate, the 4WD TRD springs will yeild 1/2" more lift. Also they MAY OR MAY NOT have a slightly different spring rate to compensate for the extra weight. Either way, the difference won't be HUGE, but it would be noticeable.

In the end, I'll probally just order some TRD 4WD coils from a DEALER using a VIN from a truck on their lot that is CONFIRMED to be TRD 4WD with my OWN EYES, then install those springs. I'll put them on by themselves, then put them on w/ the top spacer and take measurements. If they are indeed 1/2" taller, then I'll just whip up some custom 1/2" spacers for the rear and call it a day.

Andy- There is a Yotatech member that works for a BMW Dealer here in AZ and he has offered to try to help get the coils at a very good price.

If you can pull a VIN and get a part number, We can get them to AZ and I ca ship them to you.

Or you can order, I'm just trying to help. I agree that the 2WD and 4WD coils are probably pretty close.

LOL Holy CHIT!!! I guess it depends on if Bubba or LeRoy was working that shift and put your front suspension together as to which coil springs you got from Toyota. Maybe since it's from a DC, they put the heavier springs on there to compensate for the added cab weight. Who the hell knows? The dealers don't. The factory is the ONLY source of TRUSTED information, and until they call me back, that one's out to lunch.

So the cab takes precedent over the front drivetrain? 2/4WD D-cab is same as 4WD access cab? so maybe the 4WD D-cab coils are even longer?

for a 2003 Tundra (doesnt list 2004 info yet), online parts catalog shows these combos:
4WD standard cab
4WD access cab
2WD V6 standard cab
2WD V6 access cab
2WD V8 access cab
2WD V8 with Limited/SR5
2WD V8 base
it also lists 2WD & 4WD sequoia coils

each of these combos has a left and right part number. thats 18 possible part numbers and color combinations............. :pat:

i guess the d-cab started in 2004? add all those possible combinations into the mix now!

Nothing to worry about, you'll get 1/2" more lift w/ the Y/Y, B/Y coils as opposed to the R/Y, P/Y coils. I'll be doing the Y/Y, B/Y coils in the near future.

I did my own little bit of research just like you did, Andy. I can confirm that EVERY 2WD & 4WD 2005 Double Cab TRD Tundra on the lot had the Yellow/Yellow Blue/Yellow coils. Also, the D-Cab appears to ride higher all the way around. I agree with both of you, that either coil will provide similar results. But with that extra 1/2" from the YY BY coils, won't we lose 1/2" of droop over the coil's Andy is running? Isn't this one of the major reason's for the original Frank setup?

Also, with this extra 1/2" of lift, lift height's are going to be around 3 inches, correct? Won't this start to hurt CV angles, and boots?

Personally I would like to see the lift stay at 2" with the Revtek type top out.

That way you keep max droop and don't go too high.

Andy, I think eBay you right, we just did not know it. Lets work on finding out what you have there. That seems to be the best solution, even better than the 4WD coils.

Keep in mind the Chevy spring everyone swaps too come off of a 2WD pickup as well.

I was at my in-laws this weekend, and my father-in-law has a '00 tundra Access Cab 4WD NON-TRD. His coils are Red/Yellow and Purple/Yellow just like the Tundra 2wd TRD coils. Hmmmmm. I guess this could explain the possibility that the same coils are used in 2WD and 4WD applications and therefore the cross-references when looking them up by numbers.

What I DO know is that I have the Red/Yellow and Purple/Yellow coils and I am VERY happy with them. My ride hight is perfect and is level with the rear, the suspension flex is on target, and the ride is good both on road and off. In other words, looks like this is the ticket for me, so I won't be changing to the 4WD TRD coils. I'll be getting the part numbers ASAP and posting them here.

So like i said...The deciding factor for coil type is the CAB TYPE and NOT the DRIVETRAIN. D-cab coils are longest, then Access Cab, then Std Cab.

someone correct this if you think its wrong.

It's wrong because the Tundra guys use TRD Access Cab 4WD springs to lift their NON-TRD 2WD Access Cab Tundras 1.5".

If Toyota makes spring selections this confusing, I can't imagine what other vehicles are like. All I know is that my top plates should be coming in today and I'll have the new coils on and those SAW's on their way to Canada!
