New Runner Has Arrived
Hey Everybody,
My new 04 Limited V8 4x4 Runner has arrived. I will pick it up tomorrow afternoon. Dealer said it has 400 miles on it already. Does anybody know if this is normal? Should I ask for some kind of discount?
Thanks,
Bo

Uh.....YES!
It should be sent via flatbed or car carrier not driven there!
They will give you all kinds of excuses but I would ask for some free stuff.
They are much less likely to give a reduction than free stuff.
Maybe like free install on a supercharger.

It's not normal. See if it's been reported sold already. Even if it's never been titled, the warranty clock is running beginning with the reported sale date. You're probably buying someone's demo. If so, ask for a free extended warranty for compensation. The only exception is if they did a dealer trade to get you the exact vehicle you wanted, and drove it back instead of using a transporter. A new 'Runner will typically have between 2 and 20 miles at delivery, depending on how many times it's been shifted between ship, train and truck to reach it's first dealership.

I would not accept the vehicle
figure 400 miles is equivalent to 8 hrs of driving on the highway from one city to the next. who knows what could have happened then... also if it was highway miles you have to figure in they drove a long distance breaking in at one constant speed/tachspeed too.
I'd say ask for the free 7yr 100k warranty or something (best bet i think) or tell em to knock off an additional 1000 from the agreed price.
If not, walk away and find another dealer... I would never accept that kind of mileage on any car...

Ughhh
400 miles is way excessive, IMO.
I agree with BT17R & Good Times on this..insist on a free extended warrenty, or do not accept the vehicle.
Someone who does not care about the vehicle could have run it pretty hard for 400 miles. That defeats the purpose of paying the premium for new, if someone unknown to you has already put that many miles on it. Who the hell knows how it was driven? For that many clams, you should be very picky.

People take cars with all sorts of miles on them when their sold new, their is no hard anything thats says which ones get better mpg, performance gains or lose, and the biggie longevity, I've had friends that had demos and they where fine but thats them not me.
Think about all the people you know who don't have a clue to the break in.
Gotta ask yourself, is it leased or are you buying it and keeping it till the wheels fall off or at least a good 100k, are you gonna keep it or trade it in for a 300hp 2005 Pathfinder in a year are you anal when it comes to maintenance.
Lots of vehicles get beat on before the owners get them, I went down to the Newark port in Jersey and watch them unload Subaru WRX's, the 300hp Turbo ones and damn those things screamed, I guess that seats the rings, I've even seen them unload M3 and M5's and AMG vehicles now you wanna hear an engine that was rudely awaken from it's slumber, what a way to say welcome to america.
Funny thing is people buy the car with 3-5 maybe 10 or 20 miles on them and the guys at the port rap them
The brake in procedure is a little more lenient on the 4Runner, I've heard the engine is broken in after the 1st 5-20 miles, guess your not the break it in hard type.
Think about it, and if you don't buy it someone else will, when I went to get mine they sold it and going to a different dealer I ended up with a loaded Limited with Nav for less than the original Limited and it had 3 miles on it.
Sometimes things happen and better thing are around the corner.
Whatever you do man good luck with your decision but I doubt anything is wrong with the engine, think I said enough

Well folks,
I went ahead and took it. I really like this vehicle. It drives like a dream. They said the extra miles came from being transfered between 2 dealers before making it to my dealer. Everything looks to be in good shape, so I didn't worry about it. They did give me a little off sticker because of the miles.
Thanks for the help,
Bo

Damn 400 miles...mine had 3. I wouldnt have accepted it. Those are probably the hardest driven miles ever your rig will see. I like to do a proper break in for the first 1k and you can bet the guy who drove it between dealers didnt care about that.

400 wow. Mine had 170 though. The exact mileage from a dealer in 1 city to the city I bought it in. I think it had like 3 miles on it before. No probs to report. Enjoy your new rig.

When I bought my old 00 Civic Si, it had 350 miles on it. It didn't bother me too much because nothing was wrong with it.
I should have argued, but I was too excited to get it.:pat:

Isn't there some state law that after x amount of miles a vehicle cannot be classfied as "new" anymore. I know this sounds a bit far fetched but I could swear that CA law is something like 35 miles. My girls uncle is a Nissan dealer in AZ. I will try to get ahold of him.

Don't know about the mileage sure hope their is a law but I know if say a New Vehicle get damaged beyond X amount of dollars they have to be sold as used cars cause of the extented amount of work it needed.
A few years ago the Corvette dealer got vandalized before Halloween and with an average of 10-20k in damage to brand new vettes about 20 of them the owner said right on the news that they will be fixed, discounted and sold as used cause of all the body work and new soft tops that where needed

ive gotta say, i like the new runner and all, but i still think the old one is nicer looking.
i just bought a 2001 black sr5.. was my dream car for about the last 4 years, and i last i got a hold of one.
got it used with about 46,000 miles on it, but honestly it was like a brand new car. the guy that had it before me babied and garaged her every night.
i do prefer the interior of the new (gen 4) one of course.. i guess its the awkward look of the base sr5 and sport models exteriors that throws me.
you guys have certainly convinced me that a lot can be done about that though!

Ouch.
I wouldn't have taken it, man. Those 20 year old kids that they get to "transfer" the car between dealers drive the ˟˟˟˟ out of them. You can bet that your "proper engine break in" never got done, and in fact, it probably got the engine redlined a bunch of times on the way. You can still go back and try to get the dealer to extend the warranty. Nice Toy, man, but be careful.
