New owner w/ squeaky 4Runner

I'm a new member here as I just purchased a '99 4Runner LTD 4WD with 120K miles. So far I enjoy most things about it, but I have a question about a small issue I have. Whenever the wheel is turned to the maximum end (left or right), a fairly loud squeaking noise can be heard - but only for a moment. I suspect it needs some simple attention - like power steering fluid. I'm not mechanically inclined so please let me know what to do.

Bob: It sounds too loud to be normal. It's hard to describe the sound, but I guess it's not really a squeak. It's more like a whistle, I guess. I could be wrong - it may just be a normal noise. Thanks.

Millrunner: I don't really know what a fanbelt is, but I'll check it out. Thanks.

worn bumper stops? Metal rubbing on metal? Is it more pronounced when turning and going over a bump?

The noise only occurs when the wheel is turned as far left or as far right as it can go while the car is in motion (such as when backing out of a tight spot).

Infamous steering stops

I agree with the posters who suggest "steering stops." Try the following link and read the first part entitled, "First, the infamous steering stops . . ." It tells a way to prevent the noise with regular lubrication.

I followed the link and determined the infamous steering stops to be the problem. Thanks to all who responded.
