New to me 96 2WD V6 4Runner with a few questions
So far I have replaced oil, coolant, and air filter. I have fixed the climate control lights and back door key lock.
Need to replace the Fuel filter and going to put in a external trans cooler.
A few questions
There seems to be a "tick" at idle it seems to run good and have plenty of power but it worries me. Any idea what it could be?
The coolant was rusty so I was wondering if those flush chemicals do any good or harm?
Can you buy the knobs for the slide climate controls or should I go to the junk yard?
Any other thing I should look at?

Please elaborate on the "tick" sound that you're hearing. Is it coming from anywhere specific? Can you listen under the hood and try to pinpoint it? Post a video maybe?
AFAIK, you can buy the knobs for the climate control. I believe the part number is 55905-89115.

Could be caused by worn-down valve shims.
But, it could be caused by a lot of things. Does it only happen when it's warm, not at all when it's cold? Does it happen when it's in gear, but not in neutral or park? Any more details you can get will help.
It could be a loose belt, exhaust or something hitting trans/firewall, loose pulley, or a lot of other things.
Sorry I can't be of more help at this point.

when engine is cold you do not hear it. As it warms up you start hearing it.it does not get louder when you rev the engine.the engine seems to run smooth with no misses or hesitation.

Any more ideas.... Like I said I just got it and do not know its history. This will not go off road so do I really need the skid plate? The only way i see to change the oil filter is from the bottom?

If you'll re-read it, you'll notice I said "lifter", not "filter". Easy mistake to make, no big deal. That's not likely your issue, but just for future knowledge, you can change the oil filter by reaching through the driver's side front wheel well. You can unclip the black rubber cover and reach right in to where the filter is. You can also reach the filter from the top and get a filter wrench on it if you needed one.
But, if you have a worn lifter or lobe, you will need some camshaft work done, and that's probably not going to be really cheap.
What weight of oil did you use when you changed it? 5w30? If you used the wrong oil, you could be getting a knock from that.
Can you get any information from the P/O about it's maintenance or performance history? Did this ticking just start for you, or was this happening when you first bought it? Is there something you could have done that might have contributed, or was it like this when you bought it?
If you're not going to off-road and will be on pavement only, you don't absolutely need the skid-plates, but why wouldn't you use them? It's not that difficult to get them off/on when you need to get at something. They're there to protect your oil pan and other delicate under-body parts from potential damage. It's cheap insurance to use them, just in case. You don't have to use them, but I would.

My 97 needed a knob for one of the sliders on the CC panel when I bought it - I was able to buy a set of 4 for $10 on ebay. Since I only needed one, I have three extra in the glovebox. If you only need one or two, I'd be happy to sell them to you.

I know you said lifter I was asking the filter question as an afterthought. Is there any way to be sure about the lifter? I put 5W30 in it. Could I try a different weight?
I Bought it from the P/O father and he had no idea. You really cant hear it from inside the car When you start it up is is quite as can be until it all warms up then you can hear it.
