New Intake Manufacturer
Hi,
My name is Mike Clark rep for Pro Lex Performance. We are a Lexus tuner and parts manufacturer and are extending our reach out in to other Toyota areas. We have had great sucsess with our PLP Silent Flow Intake for the IS300 and we are now developing one for the 4 Runner. I you guys are tired of the open element style intake this is the one. You may view more info about the silent flow design at www.prolexperformance.com
If there is enough interest we will go forward with a baseline dyno and product dyno. The IS300 gained 8+rwhp and 7+rwtq from our system.
Thank You
Mike Clark

PS, If I am out of line please email me and I will edit my post.

Hey IS Pilot, welcome to the forums! I'm glad to see you went with a foam filter element. K&N have been ripping people off selling their FIPK for awhile now. I'm not sure if they even Dyno'ed it but there is a guy named Gadget who has and his resluts have seemed quite negative with this type of unit.
We have had really good results by doing the "Deckplate Mod" which is basically cutting a hole in the front of the airbox and using a small screw in type window when we go offroading to protect it from dust and water intake ... and the results are quite noticeable, especially when used with an Amsoil Filter. We also have another mod coming up fast known around here as the "Dr. Z" mod which modifies/removes the silencer and this mod combined with the deckplate is very promising.
Considering that the deckplate and Dr. Z's mod combined are only a couple of bucks maybe $15-$20 it is a very popular mod to say the least. So it may be in competition for your setup. What kind of hp are you talking about when it comes to 4Runners?
Here is a link that has extensive testing done to a 4Runner when it comes to a lot of performance mods: GadgetOnline make sure to check out the rest of his website it is a really good read. Also make sure to check our tech section here to read about "Dr. Z's Silencer Mod".
Cheers and again welcome to the forums!

All in all your kit seems awfully similar to the Intake Silencer Removal. Is your kit for the 4Runner going to utize the OEM airbox, or is that going to be replaced? Aother issue, those running the S/C without any fuel or engine mgt upgrades will notice a decline in power as more air equals a leaner running motor. I think for the most part, several people have investigated aftermarket intakes and have been dissatisfied with thier performance...Why spend hundreds, when you can get better performance out of a $4 deckplate? Anyhow, personally I may be interested in seeing a design.

Is it just me or does this look a lot like Dr. Z's Silencer Removal mod? I was looking at the pictures and it looked a lot like it. Although it may be because it's on a lexus, but it just looks like it replaces the silencer/resonator with a tube much like what Dr. Z's mod does. To me that's all that this seems like.
Just a little observation
*EDIT* ACK!!! Mike!!! You beat me to it!!! Drat!!

Well...
I took a look at their intake on the Lexus. Seems kinda pricey to me for what you get. It's a good idea, but we're lucky in that our trucks are much easier to modify.
Not to toot my own horn, or bash their ingenuity and expertise, but I doubt that whatever they could come up with would be any better than the DeckPlate/Silencer Mod combo.

Speaking of intakes...
Hey guys... have any of you seen this yet? AEM BRUTE FORCE INTAKE I came from the Honda 'rice rocket' camp before I stepped up to a 99 LTD runner but my experiece has been that AEM makes a good product....(sure you'll say it's all the same...filter on a stick woopty doo) and I agree to an extent but a majority of the import modders out there swear by AEM products and hey...I'll vouch for em' too. that's just my opinion on a car based standpoint. And of course we're dealing with a different beast here...not a high revving 4 banger.....Anyways...wuddya guys think of the Brute Force? There's dyno charts listed on their application guide...theres data out there that proves gains on hondas and the like but on our runners? Hmm..... wuddya think? Have a happy turkey day all!

Thank you for welcoming me here. Well I have to say I read the links for Dr. Z and The Deck Plate mod. Although Dr. Z has a good theory on replacing the resonator we will be going a step further and replace the entire tube from the tb to the airbox with a mandrel bent tube and a hi-flow foam element. We will only offer this intake to the public if we can prove gains over stock. The test bed is a stock '02 4Runner we also have a TRD sc in the box to be installed after we dyno the intake on the stock motor then we will dyno the intake with supercharger. The dyno will be done on a Dynojet 248c.
I do not want to seem like we are taking away from anyone's design/idea, we have been doing this for quite some time and they are also used on all the Team Lexus race cars.
People like Dr. Z and others on this site is what it is all about. I hope I have not stepped on any toe's and will be welcome here.

Mike,
Welcome aboard. IMHO, No, I don't think you stole anyone's idea or stepped on anyone's toes. I think it's great that you are coming here to spark up interest in your product. I think that as a former TMS Torrance employee, Toyota has really lost touch at the grass roots level. Nissan in my strong opinion, is doing it right---the Xterra to me is the fruits of their efforts---and look how well that vehicle is selling.
I hope in your efforts to design and launch this product that you do seriously take the feedback from this board through your website and/or other feedback mechanism. I'm sure you've read through the posts here about the Dr. Z intake silencer mod and read about some of the issues pertaining to it. There are a lot of smart minds here---some without the 'requisite' ME or EE degrees or not.
In anycase, welcome to our forum and as a word to the wise, become a member of the community first and a vendor later. Happy Thanksgiving, Mike.

Bob, you're absolutely right about how Nissan is doing things. A little over a week ago I bought a new 2002 Xterra. I really like how Nissan handles things, and I especially like how they're marketing and design is handled I mean Toyota is great and everything, but it just seems to me like with every new generation of 4Runners and Land Cruisers, etc... they're getting more and more luxury/family truck like. I mean there's nothing wrong with that, but I really like the more "real" Sport Utility Vehicles that Nissan is making with the Xterras. It's designed with active people in mind, and a stock Xterra is definitely a very capable at offroading (I measured and the lowest clearance under the truck is 10" and that's with the tube steps still attached ) On top of all that I feel that the Xterra's engine has more power than the 3rd Gen 4Runner's engine. It's probably just in my head but compared to my mom's '97 4Runner (3.4L V6) my Xterra (3.3L V6 non-supercharged) the Xterra has a lot better acceleration, and more low end torque than the 4Runner, although I haven't opened the Xterra up (I'm still breaking in the engine, so I haven't taken it above 3000 RPMS yet).
But anyway the reason I chose the Xterra is because of how Nissan handles it, and because it was designed as a true sport utility vehicle, and you can tell as soon as you sit in it and drive it Now if Toyota did or does something like what Nissan did with the Xterra, I would definitely get one (And I would trade my Xterra in a heartbeat if they started manufacturing that little sport utility car thing that they have on their design page
