New to forum and to 4runners(hello everybody)

Hi all,

I just bought a 98 4runner with 44k miles. I want to do most of the maintance myself but am not willing to pay $100+ for a service repair manual. I can get a used 97 4runner service manual relatively cheap but wanted to know if the engines for 97 and 98 are the same?

thanks guys! GREAT forum.

Hi Ripper, welcome to the forum.
I believe the '97 manual should suffice you as the engines are the same.

A set of factory manuals is a good way to go for info.

Big HELLO to you.

If you dont mind my asking, what was the cost of the 4 runner? was it a 4x4 or a 4x2 model? I just test drove a 2000 model 4x2 and it was a thrill.

Wow!! what a welcome!! This is a very interesting question that deserves a good answer. I personally would love to find a used factory service manual. They exist, but finding one may be like finding a goose that lays golden eggs. I'm sure a lot of readers could save a lot of money by finding one used for about the price of a new crappy Haynes or Chilton manual. I can't begin to tell you where to look for one. Maybe look in used book stores. These manuals are very valuable and can easily pay for themselves within a year if you are willing to crawl under your Runner and get dirty to do the work yourself.

There are cases of a manual owner scanning pages from the manual and e-mailing or posting the pages on the internet. This is kind of illegal as the info in the manual is copywrited intelectual property of Toyota. You might get someone who has a manual to do this for you, but IMHO its kind of unethecal.

If you do find a used manual please let us know where you found it. - Thanks.

Welcome to the boards.

Ditto what everyone else says re wealth of info.

As for the service manuals, i've seen them on eBay. I think there might be a set being sold right now. Search "4runner"

Yeh, i've learned alot from other forums and found it to be a good way to save $$$$
