New Bilsteins in my '00 Runner
Just installed a set of Bilsteins in my '00 Limited. Love the ride and handling and certainly not too harsh a ride for me (my Supra rides on Koni's with lowering springs, heavy sway bars and 35 series tires - now that's a rough ride). Thanks to those who posted threads about cutting off the old ones with a Sawzall - great tech tip! Don't know what I would have done if I hadn't read up on this.
To make tightening the new shocks easier on the rear I made a special tool. I took a 3/8" drive, 17mm socket and welded a 3/4" nut on it. I then cut off a 5mm allen key to about 1 1/2" long. I placed the socket over the nylock nut, placed a 3/4" ratcheting wrench over it, put the 5mm allen key in the end of the shock stud, put a 5mm socket over the allen key, held the 5mm socket with a 1/4" drive ratchet and tightened away on the 17mm nylock. A little awkward at first but worked great.
I would highly recommend these shocks. Old shocks had no leaks and felt like they had a lot of life left in them but the Bilsteins make it feel 100% better.
