new 4Runner owner
Hey all,
Just wanted to drop a line and say hey... I'm a new 4Runner owner, well new owner, old 4Runner.... I picked up a 99 Ltd about two weeks ago and love it. Just waiting for it to stop raining in Vancouver and before i load it up and take it camping somewhere i couldnt have reached in my old escort.
One (age old) question tho - fuel consumption...
Now i knew she was gonna be a thirsty beast but my first tank got me about 13mpg (full tank, reset odo, ran to empty, refilled and checked odo against how much i put in)
is this to be expected for city driving, or is it a little low?
any tips/mods/tune ups that can help a little?
(i know nothing's gonna help a lot but any improvement is an improvement
thanks in advance... look forward to chatting more about minor mods and gadgets in the near future.
cheers,
D!

First off, congrats on the runner.
I recently purchased a 96 limited and the first thing I did was change the fuel filter. It is cheap and easy to replace. It was dirty as all get out. My gas mileage went up significantly. I get around 16 city/21 highway.

Congrats man. I'm sure you will love it.
I have a '98 Limited 3.4 L. I've had it for about 7 or 8 months.
I've done the Deckplate Mod and have also changed mufflers.
The lowest MPG I've gotten is a little over 16 and the highest I've gotten was last time at 18.8. This is all city driving and with quite steep hills in parts.
I would check the pressure in your tires. I also use Marvel Magic, but I'm not sure if this stuff really does anything.

haven't done the fuel filter, but i got my 96 SR5 last summer in August and the first few full tanks average 15mpg in city. i put sum fuel injector cleaner for the next few tanks and in city-16mpg, hwy-18~22mpg. it takes a little getting used to. Lots of people on here do the ISR with Deckplate mod and is said to increase throttle response and maybe 1-3 mpg. personally though, i'm in the process of getting an Airaid MIT (basically an ISR) with a drop-in TrueFlow Filter & a deckplate.

yeah, i thought it was low...
i'm not mechanically inclined at all so the deckplate mod looks a little much for me to do - apartment living aint helpful to learning to work on cars!!!
Other than getting the fuel filter replaced and running some injector cleaner through the system is there any thoughts on what i could get looked at? It's currently at the dealer's getting the HVAC panel fixed up so i could get them to look at it while its in there...
alls i know is that its super clean, about 199,000 kms on it and there was a bunch of fluid flush's/changes done before i bought it. oh, its got a brand new timing belt also...
should i raise the mileage question with a dealer, take it to a private mechanic or get the injectors/filter cleaned and see what happens?
thanks guys, really looking forward to getting out and about this summer
