New 4Runner or fix the rusty roof??
While waxing the 4Runner today I discovered some scaly bumpy rust under my roof rack, left front. So I removed the rack and found that where that plastic plug is located for the rack rail cover (stock) rust has developed all around it. Looks like the seal broke or Toyota forgot to seal it, I dunno. Anyway the rust has gone through the metal, I chipped most of it away and treat it with Qurox Polymeric rust converter and painted it. Now I know this is only a temporary fix but what would you do? Sell it and get a 2007 4Runner (what my wife wants) or get it professionally repaired at a body shop?

The rust spot is about 2 inches round and the metal is like paper thin due to the length of time its been there. Looks like the roof is double walled, not exactly sure on that but definitely the top is shot. The only fix I see is to cut and weld.
I like all 4Runners and I'm not stuck in on only one generation. The only down fall I see with the 4th G is the lower ground clearance but that can easily be remedied. I may even just sell it, pay off some bills and get used, cheaper 4Runner (no rust of course)

At least get a quote and see what kind of cost you're looking at for the repair. I would definately have them cut out the cancer and weld in new sheet metal.....any other way would be a hack job. Sounds like you've already got your mind set on a 4th gen though. If so I say go for it (I'll probably make the plunge in 2-3 years as well.

Or.....
Just chop the top and make it a soft top. Probably look pretty bad ass! It's sunny just about everyday in Hawaii too, isn't it??? But the wifey might not dig it too much, though. Oh well...

I can always get something new or used later and have only 1 debt. Oh yeah the title may very possibly be replaced with new Tacoma
