In need of some desperate help....

Allright I have had a 22re in my 83 P/U for like 3 month's now...replaced many thing's...the thing run's fine untill I got to push on the gas, it just want's to fall on it's face...I took it in to a mechanic and they told me they couldn't figure it out, all the other place's say it will be $90 an hour and they don't even think they wanna look at it...So I am stuck and don't know what to do, just seeing if anyone knew of anyone that could actually have some brain's to figure it out....Thnx for the help!

fuel filter? I dunno, easy enough to replace though. You could have some carb problems too: needle and seat, float maybe. Good luck

Heck, I guess I didn't see the e . How is your timing? When my timing chain jumped a tooth, it really could have been mistaken for a fuel problem. It's probably worth checking anyway.

Fuel pressure -- need to check!

Air flow meter sensor.

It's also worth to swap out a known good ECU.

Good luck,

Take the electrical connector cable out of the AFM, clean the plug and socket and replace it very firmly. This happened to me when I got my Amsoil air filter, I had pulled this out just enough to disconnect it. You may have grease or dirt stopping the connections or it may not be fully in place.

If your friend has a 22re, pull the AFM cable out and see if it suddenly behaves the same way. If your dies slowly compared to his with the AFM disconnected then it's likely the timing. You should also check your wiring; since this is a transplant you may have severed one or more of the wires involved.

Then that is your problem most likely. Grap a Haynes repair manual and get cracking. It will tell you exactly how to do it.

If you end up doing the timing you might as well put in a conversion kit like this..

I did the timing chain on my pickup. It took me like 2 days after school working on it. It's not bad at all. Roger Brown has a great writeup on it: http://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTri...ingChain.shtml . I think the 2 row conversion kit is overkill: It's the plastic guides that break and not the actual chain, and the double row kit is pretty expensive. You could get a replacement kit with metal guides, but I just got one with the regular plastic guides-I figure the first ones lasted 100k miles, these should too.

Be careful with trying another ecu...in 89 when Toyota updated the EFI, they changed the injector resistance from something like 2 to 11 ohms or vice-versa. I read somewhere if you hook one of those newer computers up to a an older EFI system, the injectors will fry the ecu, like when you bridge an amp and try to run too many subs on it. I could be wrong about that, but I read it on a thread on this site a while back.
