in need of new shocks...
hello once again people-
i am looking to replace the stock shocks on my 93 4 runner...keep in mind that my cash flow is limited. what are some good options. i was looking at the procomp es9000. and, are shocks generic in the fact that one shock will mount to pretty much any car?.

You will have to get a shock that is specific for your vehicle.
There are a lot of brands out there. I run the Edelbrock IAS Performers, but they are some of the more expensive ones out here.
They are around $80 each, but well worth it.
Bilstein's are very good, and can be had for less dough than the ones I have.
Les Schwab Tires has shocks they call "Mountain Ryders" which are Gabrial gas truck shocks repackaged for them I beleive.
I ran those on mine for awhile.
They are a great shock, but I needed something a little more heavy duty than those, so off they came, and on went the Edlebrock's.
I pick up a Performance Products catelog, they have quite a few brands in there.

Corey pretty much covered the high end shocks. Bilsteins and Edelbrocks are tied for first. Then (debatebly) Rancho 9000s and 5000s are second and third.
I like my rancho 9000s because of the adjustablility. Supposedly Rancho 5000s are set to the equivolent of the 9000s in the middle setting. I keep mine in the middle and it's a lot stiffer than stock (which I like) . They're so much so that my ashtray, filled with coins, always rattles open now.
Check out www.gorancho.com for a complete spec catalog on their shocks, lengths, and mounting styles.
If you really care about ride then you have to get the shocks that are valved for your truck. However, people who want longer shocks for lifts or articulation use anything that will fit and live with the ride.
The only other thing you have to worry about how they mount, there are different styles.
