need help with 1985 auto lock hubs. . .

Hi everyone,
I'm new to the forum and new to Toyota trucks. I recently bought an 85 sr5 truck, with about 180,000 miles. Yesterday I was greasing the u-joints, and was turning the front driveshaft by hand. After a rotation or so, the fron hubs locked up. I didn't try to unlock them until this morning, and they felt like they were haveing trouble unlocking. Then when i started to drive there were clicking noises coming out of the front hubs, about one click per rotation. I have used the 4wd a few times, and they have not given me any trouble. Any ideas on what is going on now? I don't have a service manual for this truck yet, but I certainly plan on getting one. Thanks in advance for any help!

Mike

Most likly you locked them. Try backing up for 20 feet or so and see if they unlock.

The problem is that they don't seem to be fully locking or unlocking. I did back up to unlock the hubs, but the clicking noise was still there. Then I put it into 4wd, to try to fully lock them, and the clicking was still there, although it was reduced. I could probably get them to unlock if I tried enough, but I don't want this to be a reoccuring problem. I'd rather just fix it.

Oops, you were right! It was a little jerky backing out, which made me think of the hubs, but I don't think the hubs were a problem at all. The clicking noise is only around at a certain rpm, exactly the rpm I was pulling out of the parking lot at this morning. Seems to be coming from the water pump housing.
I drove a Ford before this toyota, so i'm used to things going wrong all the time. Now I'm driving this old toyota, and it's making me nervous never breaking down!
Thanks for the help,
Mike
