I could use some advice on a mystery P0770 code being thrown on my truck.
I have had an intermittent P0136 code for a couple of months now, and I have the O2 sensor waiting to be installed.
The first time the light came on with the P0136 code, It was preceeded immediately by a rough idle. I drove the truck for a while while I diagnosed and waited for the new sensor. Then I waited a bit longer for some decent weather and some free time to do the work. While I waited the light went off and the code was cleared. I assumed that to be due to an intermittent failing condition of the sensor. No big deal I thought.
So a week or two ago I notice the truck running a bit rough again. Sure enough, the light returns. No sweat, I have the sensor in my garage.
I finally get around to checking the code the other day, and I see three codes: P0136, a P0770 (what the...) and a P0136 Pending.
I am a bit confused by both the P0770 and the Pending P0136. How can there be a pending P0136 if I have an active P0136?
However, the really troubling code is the P0770, which is a Shift solenoid "E" malfunction.
I am having no shift trouble at all. All four gears and reverse are working as wel as they always have. The torque converter seems to be locking up when it it supposed to.
The service manual says to drop the pan, remove Solenoid "SL" and blow air through it. It should hold 71 psi of air when disconnected and allow air through when 12v is applied.
Does it make sense to anyone that I can have a P0770 code while not having any obvious shifting issues?
Does it seem fishy that this code appeared at the same time as a P0136?
I'd really like a simple solution before I drop the pan and fiddle with shift solenoids.
FYI, my tranny has been serviced 15K miles ago. The fluid looks good, if maybe a bit high.
I think I will try to get my O2 sensor installed today to eliminate a variable.

Apparently my first post was a little too complicated for this forum.
I'll simplify it a bit to hopefully get some advice.
Has anyone found a P0770 code to be falsely triggered?
The symptoms of a P0770 are supposed to be the torque converter lockup does not occur when it is supposed to or that lockup is happening when it is not supposed to.
The trouble areas are Shift Solenoid SL stuck open or closed, a blocked valve body or a faulty lock-up clutch.
The strange thing is I don't seem to have any shifting abnormalities.
My TC seems to be locking and disengaging when it is supposed to.
Anyone have experience battling a P0770?
Fyi, my Trans fluid looks pretty good and was flushed ~18K ago.

My lovely little CEL turned itself off again. I figured I'd check the codes for s and giggles. 2 DTCs: P0136 and P0770.
Gave my uncle a shout who owns a garage, and he says he just clears the computer when customers bring in cars with intermittent lights/codes. He has seen random, phantom shift solenoid codes pop up and disappear. If the codes reappear, he starts burning the customers' money diagnosing.
So I take my battery leads off and leave them touching for 20 minutes.
No codes of course, but due to two-trip detection logic, I need to wait for the second trip to be sure.
I am happy to report that the codes are cleared and have stayed cleared for a few days. The truck is also running beautifully.
I can only gather that the O2 sensor is intermittently failing throwing the P0136 from time to time, and I am hoping the P0770 shift solenoid code was a random occurrence.
Time will tell.

 

Did you ever remedy the p0136?

I'm getting the same code even with an 02 sim from URD.

 

I actually have not replaced the O2 yet because a) the nuts on the bung studs are fused on and i cannot remove them and b) the code has stayed off ever since. I am going to have the bung section replaced next week so I can replace the sensor then (or wait until it blows codes again and replace it when it does).

 

The nuts are a whole lot softer than the studs. Before you cut it out, get aggressive with some small vice grips and try and crush them nuts. They should just crumble. Then clean up the threads with a wire brush, maybe chase if needed. If you tried that, my apologies.
