my runner's using oil
My 91 runner has 165K on it and is running very strong, but it's using about a quart of oil every 1500 miles. I have been running full synthetic in it since I bought it at 81K miles and replaced the oil pan gasket to stop a leak that was shooting oil onto the clutch. I was thinking about using amsoi in it, but the idea of adding a $9 quart of oil every 1500 miles doesn't do much for me. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!!

You can go to a heavier weight oil, that should help curb the oil consumption problems. When your truck sits, oil is probably seeping past the seals, and then getting burned out of the chamber. A quart per 1500 miles is not unheard of. That happens.

thats bad, bad, bad...
i just had the engine replaced in my 91 honda with a JDM spec engine. the previous engine was the first year honda used "composite" cylinder walls. this particular engine is very famous for losing oil throught the rings after 150k. the engine was really strong; a little stretched, but i would have to put about a quart of oil in every 1000 miles. i was running castrol synthetic. i eventually switched back over to non-synthetic and it slowed the burning down. i loved that engine, but its no fun to have to keep on checkin you oil level every stinkin week. eventually the timing went (she was at 230k) and i replaced her. IMO, dont go amsoil unless you feel like "burning" money.

You don't state what type of engine. If it's the 3.0, it is normal, according to Toyota USA, to consume 1 quart every 1200 miles. I know it sounds unbelieveable, but mine was doing the same thing I asked the dealer and they told me it was normal. Not being satisifed I chased it all the way to Toyota USA and they told me it is normal. Has something to do with the close tolerences these days. I don't like it but can't be fixed.
