My Milkshake keeps my Toy in the yard

My Milkshake keeps my Toy in the yard
well...even with perfect maintenance scheduled from the day it was new,
my 1999 4Runner just milkshaked on me. So yeah I can confirm it can just
happen regardless of maintenance. I will need to replace rad, and attempt
home-drain/fill/drain/fill and recover the tranny.
I was on highway, just got done some offroad, and drove 39 miles at
75mph. didn't notice much but did notice a clunky downshift on the
highway. got to a store 3 miles from home to get a pop, smelled the coolant and
got back in to get it back home. heat was pegged, but it dropped 1 notch
as I drove 3 more miles to park it.
coolant tank overflowing with strawberry, and trans dipstick pink foamy.
engine gurgling for 10 minutes after shutdown
Oh well....190,000+ miles and this is the first 'critical' failure. it is not
a loss...rather a big win on how long it lasted before a major issue like this
I juz hope the tranny recovers without rebuild.

X3 on the title. lol
But yeah that really sucks dude. The biggest weaknesses that our trucks have are that damn in-radiator cooler. Toyota should recall our trucks and give us free external coolers!
Hope all with your tranny works out well.

Hey McFalls, if you decide to put in an aftermarket cooler go with a B&M 70264 http://www.summitracing.com/parts/BMM-70264/.
Its twice as thick as the Hayden or the Tru-cool and its built like a tank. It keeps my trans cool even in the Houston rush hour traffic in the summer.

I am going through a rebuild right now. Mine let go in Dec, and after replacing rad, and flushing over 30 gallons through tranny with a t-tech flush machine, I still only got about 3 months before everything let go. The antifreexe jst eats away at the glue holding the clutch packs among other things. Good luck, and def. put back some $$$ after flushing, you may need it for a rebuild. I wish I would have saved the 400 I had in flushing to put towards my new tranny!!! LOL And that price was using a friends shop and his machine and basically paying for fluid and no labor.
External cooler now and forever, completely bypass stock in radiator design!!!

Fog, thanks for the link. As cheap as that cooler is, I don't know why I have yet to add one to my 4Runner?? I've got to get that ball rolling...

Ok,
1) new radiator with integrated cooler installed $
2) thermostat removed
3) detergent power flu$h of cooling system x2
4) flush of cooling system, new thermo$tat
5) fill of cooling $ystem
6) tranny pan dropped, filter replaced
7) atf poured in tranny until it came out the hoses red and dripped out red,
.........9 quart$
8) then computerized power flu$h of tranny 3 times,
.........45 quart$
9) it runs GREAT
---
will monitor atf dipstick for 1000 miles, and get one more computerized power flush
of tranny if I make it to 1000 miles. [any sign of foam or water prior to 1000 miles, immediate 4th power flush.]
I will also not be surprised if tranny slips sometime soon in future.
it never blew any codes, so I might be lucky with the torque converter, clutches,
bands, and solenoids.
this cost me some ching, but still less than half what a rebuild would cost
