My First Toy
hi all, i've just traded in my '00 xterra (my first vehicle) for a '04 sports ed. v8 4x4runner. it's so much smoother and has so much more power. the only disappointing thing is the stock ground clearance is much lower and tires are not as meaty. i am looking to put in some yokohama geolander at +II 265/70-17's. from what i read this size should be fine without a lift, but i read that some have used this size along with a 2.5-3" lift.

Welcome to the board and congrats on the purchase, considering you went from an Xterra to the V8 4Runner be prepared for some shock cause for the 1st several 1000 mile your gonna feel like your driving a lifted sports cars, you will be amazed at how well it corners with X-Reas
Do a search cause plenty have put 265/70 R17 tires on with out a lift and no rubbing, I plan to upgrade to that size to, the Geolandar AT+II are awesome tires but many perfer the Bridgestone Dueller Revos, many have lifted their 4Runners, plenty to read

welcome to the board!
i agree with Edge ... if you do a search on it, you'll find that a great many people have put the 265/70/17s on without the lift and have no problem with it.
so, the lift part is purely personal preference for those who want more height/clearance. it's not necessary to do the lift though if all you want is to stuff some 265/70/17s in there.
i don't know much about the yoko tires, but go over to http://www.tirerack.com if you want to check out some of the comparative ratings. i think you will find many more people prefer the revos, but again, a lot of it has to do with what you are looking for in a tire, and what you prefer personally.
edge - the '04 sport come with xreas automatically?

X-Reas is standard on the 4th Gen Sport and optional on the Limited although pretty much all Limited models here in the Northeast have X-Reas, while it is a hard to find option on the West coast, Toyota does not want the left side having a Limited with X-Reas
4route, you have a sport so you should have X-Reas unless Im wrong and you have an SR5

Edge, yes, I do have xreas (i did the lift around it!) but I was unsure of the 2004s, and wanted to be sure that PigSooey was hearing the right stuff from us ... if they eventually wanted to know about lifts.
