I have power side mirrors that only fold in if I push a button. Most luxury vehicles here have mirrors that retract/detract automatically when you turn on/off the ignition and if I forget to retract them

?????????????????????????????????????????????????? ??????
you side vie mirrors fold in towards the car? please explain

Chris,

Look at my post about the Custom window shades. My mirrors retract to that position in the photos. There is a button next to my door lock button that will fold the mirrors in to the door and open them back out.

Probably because of the narrow streets and parking spots here if you don't have them in the states.

My biggest complaint with my ’03 Sport Edition V8 4X4 is the climate control. It almost always goes into recirculate mode when I start the car. Apparently, it compares the inside temperature with the selected temperature. If the selected temperature is a certain amount lower than the actual temp, it goes into recirculate for maximum cooling. This is NOT in auto mode. I guess it’s assuming you’ve left the AC button on. This is a total pain, because most of the time the outside air provides enough cooling and AC is not needed. The worst case is when the car has been parked in the sun for a while, so it’s hot inside. All I really want is for some fresh outside air to circulate through the car to get the hot stuffy air out, but recirculate mode just makes it worse. I’ve complained to Toyota, but they can’t really do much, as this is the way the system is designed. Perhaps if enough people complain….

We don't have those... No the DRL are you turn signal lights, they are just active all of the time. The are REALLY bright.
We have the auto headlight function, but I find mine doesn't turn on unless it is really dark, way beyond the point where they legally need to be on. I am told this can be adjusted by the...cha ching... dealer.

jharris2... All I got was the work number: TSB NV001-03
My dealer, of course, knows nothing about this. I have to go in to place the order. I have been told that they only people who complain of the squeaky seat are the ones who have the side airbags.

tom_993, I too was just about to complain about that !

My sunroof is very quiet.

This is all very interesting to read. Sounds like a lot of these issues come from the car thinking its smarter than you. Your Runners may have psychic ability but you have to pay the dealer to discover it, or re-program it. :chicken:

This style of 4Runner will be around for at least a few years. I hope a designer or two for the 2004 models are reading. If not designers please let there be market research people reading that the designers might listen to.

Changed for 2004 my arse... I'm going to make Toyota fix most of these, execept for my minor complaints (the windows, pocket, soft plastic, flip down cover) as soon as I can stay in-town for more than a week.

Figures that I'd be the first to have the squeak without side air bags. I'll just have it fixed when i take it in the next time -- not worth a special trip just for that.

The right side of my sunroof rattles when closed. I took it to the dealer and they are ordering all new track parts and will replace, because they said that they could not find the exact cause of the rattle.
Also, in the owners man. it tells you how the OWNER can change the door lock mode, so that when you turn off the key and get out of the truck all the doors will unlock so I don't have to push any more buttons to unlock my rear trunk or a side door.
I followed the steps described in the book and could not get it to work. I went to the dealer and they charged me $40 to have this done. Should'nt this be a warranty item?

TooEZgoin, Man... I would serious complain to Toyota HQ about that. I followed the instructions in the manual and it took me 30min (of doing the same thing, over and over) to change the lock program. I didn't want the doors to lock when I powered up or shifted out of "P."
I would, really, file a complaint with Toyota NA over that because that is BS and you should have your $40 refunded.

You should have complained about that. That should be a warranty item. If the instructions per the owners manual does not work, that is a warranty item.

I guess the next question I want to ask is, how many "options" can be programed by the dealer. I saw a thread that the DRL's can be programed on/off. Does anyone have any leads to how we can make changes without the dealer so we can keep that $40 for something like

Hell, I would have paid the $40 to turn the DRL off... My dealer wants $70. I po'd because my sales guy said that I could disable it myself.

I would like to be able to leave them on during the day, but turn them off at night/while I'm in the woods/Parked/Using NODs...

JGage,

I would go to another dealer. The DDRL's only cost 40 bucks to "install" them. Your dealer is something funky. Now with that said, they do turn off when the headlights are on correct?

I am going to go back and demand a refund. Yes it should be a warranty item. The dealer was trying to tell me that it was an "option" that my vehicle just did not have.
After going home and reviewing the manual (page 17) it Clearly states -"YOU can set the following automatic door locking and unlocking functions" I wanted to set function B, and I followed the instructions over and over. It would not work. When I went to the dealer, they did not tell me that they tried to get it to work, all they said is that they had to use some kind of hand held device that would reprogram the locks and it would cost $40.

I guarantee that trying to get the dealer to refund $40 will be a pain and will probably cost me more in time and effort (like having to write/call corp. offices) but I will do this on principle.

Can't wait to hear the B.S. lines I'll get when I go in tomorrow (5/2).

Post Door Locks/DRLs

I have had my 2003 4Runner Limited for a month now and have no complaints to this point. The vehicle is very tight, no squeaks and rattles at all.
Here in Ontario Canada we must have DRLs and I love what Toyota has done. My 1999 Runner used the headlights on a slightly lower power setting as the DRLs which I did not like. Many people think when it is dark out that they have their headlights on which they do not. Using the very bright amber lights is fantastic.
When I picked the 4Runner up the dealer could not get the door locks to change as per the owners manual. I had read on another site that the OWNERS manual is wrong. The dealer went to the SERVICE manual and then using some electronic box changed the setting for me AT NO COST!!!!!!!!!! It took only a few minutes. That dealer is ripping you off. Find a new one.
I just love my 4Runner.

When I start the 4Runner with the E-Brake depressed the DRL do not turn on until I let the brake out, try that in the woods

The only time mine does not squeek is when someone is sitting in the right rear seat.

I sat in mine for about 45 minutes the first night trying to program it.

Never really noticed the stereo problem until someone mentioned it last night. Definetly need more sound back there.

I also have a bad kink in the left rear window seal from where the dealer had that dumb box in the window for the key.

I think I wil be making an appt. for the dealer next week.
Otherwise I love the truck, and realize it's the first year for the new one's.

Round one with the dealer is finished. I went there saturday and explained my position with owners manual in hand. I spoke to the head guy in the service dept. and he would slightly twist my words and come up with a response as to why it was a legit. charge. After I made my position clear again, he told me that I would have to come back during the week and speak with the manager. To be continued

Keep Complaining

Well......round 1 is over. If the manager won't budge send a message to Toyota themselves and ask when the local area representative will be to the dealership.
If this starts to fail you could always do what I seen a guy here in Ontario Canada a couple of years ago do. He obviously was having a dispute with a GM dealer over his new Corvette. He was walking on the public sidewalk in front of the dealership with a very large sign indicating his problem. I heard that it did not take long before someone from the dealership addressed his problems. I would assume that actually doing something was far better than all the bad publicity he was giving them with his protest.
Just food for thought.

Well I picked up my 2003 4Runner last night and I love it so far. They only beef I have is where the power window switches are. They are a little tricky to find when you are driving.

Other than that, the 4Runner is awesome. The V8 is kick a$$ and you have to love that engine roar!!!

Has anyone also noticed that when you switch from regular defrost to the defrost/foot area, that it does not clear the windows. Regular defrost works great but the other defrost does not do anything. Hmmmm.
