I'll take a stab...
I am not an expert on winching since I have only owned mine since February.
But I have always though that they hand a little low, and the strongest way to operate a winch is with a dedicated bumper such as an ARB, TJM, or homebrewed one.
Plus the winch sits up a little higher also giving you more ground clearance up front.
I have seen rigs too that have a dedicated winch full time in the back, but mainly on flatbeds such as these that sit up higher.
Take a look at Joe Chacon's setup, that's what I was talking about.
His rig is no more though, it rolled a few years back.
If you are in a situation which requires winching from the rear, that's where another person in the group would come into play.
But if it's just from the front, I have seen a few custom mounts that use a front trailer hitch, and then a custom cradle that slips into it.
But still, don't these hang out to far effect your departure and approach angles?
I guess I just like the dedicated look of the winch being inside the bumper such as my setup.
Again, this is jut my opinion, but I feel the best setup is a bumper that is made for winching.
Now for a real cool setup, and expensive too, you could go with a dedicated front bumper/winch combo, and then get a 2nd winch with the cradle mount for the rear.
Only use the cradle mount when you go off road, hook it up when you leave home, and store it at home when not in use.
A lot more money, but this way you have both ends covered.
