mud kills

yeah so we went wheelin yesterday and little did i realize that the my air intake is right at the front on the bottom part of my grill. I sucked in a bunch of water and ended up killing the engine, we cleaned it out, and ended up towing it to a parking lot where i performed an emergency oil change. Right now the CAT is clogged preventing a steady back pressure causing my cylinders to miss fire. BAH

so basically i learned two lessons, stay to my normal trails and crawling, and get a snorkle.

any ideas on trying to fix my rig? i just need a solution to get her running decently so i can sell her.


Im looking to get either a 98 tacoma or a 98 4runner.

Did you pull off your TB and clean/dry out the intake real well? You could have water pooled up somewhere in your intake, which will cause it to run a little rough. Or you could have bent a rod if you sucked enough water in at once.

How many miles you have on it? Is it red on red interior?

its brown on the interior and it has a fully rebuilt motor with about 3k on it.

The proper trail procedure to remove water is to pull the intake track, dry it out, open the TB, let the water out. Take the plugs out on one side, and turn it over. This will shoot water out of that cyl. bank. Wait until the water is gone from that bank. Then, replace the plugs and do the other side.

Hopefully, you didnt bend a rod.

Check the spark plugs and compression, that will tell you if you bent a rod. Then check the timing belt. When I sank mine somehow my timing belt slipped 2 teeth. It ran ok, but had ZERO power. Once we moved it over, it worked fine. I don't know about the 22r, but the 5vz isn't a valve bender if the timing slips. Good luck!

and thats exactly what i did, but it seems that the CAT is clogged, we were driving it home last night, it the damn thing was glowing it was so hot, and the clog seems to be making it so i get no back pressure causing my cylinders to miss fire. I dont think i bent a rod.

Any suggestions on trying to get the clog out of the the CAT? Im gonna try a pressure washer.

I would get a new cat. I seriously doubt a pressure washer is going to clean the honeycombs correctly.

Once we took a Ford Tempo(BEATER CAR) off road in a mud pit and it die in a deep puddle. it ran like crap and kept on dying. The next day we took it out on the freeway and going about 70mph just dropped it in to second and it blew everything right out on the freeway. just make sure you be kind and have no nice vehicles behind you. it is worth a try.

Hmm.. I don't think your cat has a problem. I think your engine does. It's likely dumping raw fuel in the cat (it's not getting burned). Clean up your intake, and dry it all out and put it back together. You can pull the plugs and spin the engine over, but I doubt there's any water in there if it's running at all, or it would have burnt off. I don't think you have mud in your cat, there's now way water could move through your motor, it would either hydrolock or get burnt up in the combustion chamber. As others stated, a compression check will help you determine if there's any internal issues.

No offense, but that is about the worst advice I have heard all day.

How did a Tempo - one of the worst cars ever made - survive that type of abuse?

thanks guys, man im kinda sad that this happened, but its alright.

Im gonna fix the 4runner and then get rid of it, ill probally drive a beater for the time being, and then hopefully get a newer runner
