Mounting a Flag on the Roof?

I have a sweet 2'x3' pirate flag that I want to fly off the top of my 4runner just for kicks for a few weeks.

All I have right now is the actual flag. I have the stock luggage rack on my truck, so I thought I could use that some how as a base. Any ideas on how to attach a flag pole, and what the pole should be made of?

I know firestik Firestik makes some nice poles that could work, but I thought it'd be more fun to rig something up myself. Ideas?

A piece of PVC pipe w/ an end cap and a hole drilled through it with a bolt. Hold this to a metal plate with 2 U bolts, hold the plate to a luggage rack crossbar with another 2 U bolts. Attach flag to wooden dowell w/ hole for "pipe bolt" to pass through.

Maybe try the flag pole sockets they use for quads and 3wheelers, that's what we use for the required flags for the dunes. Or a simpler bracket would be the bicycle flag bracket. Simplest still would be nylon wire ties.

Some good thoughts-- thanks guys. Im just worried about the wooden dowel snapping if I get going too fast... Maybe PVC pipe for the flag pole too?

so youre saying theflag is going to get ripped off on the freeway? Or are you saying my roof rack is going to get torn up on the freeway?

I dont really plan on much freeway-pirate-flag-flying-fun though. So its cool man. I wouldnt want my jolly jogers to get torn up.
