Manual Tranny Noise
I have a 2000 3.4L with a 5 speed manual transmission. While accelerating or when under load in any gear a shhhhhh noise can be heard. It sounds as though it is coming from the under side of the engine compartment somewhere near the firewall. The noise only happens when in gear and under load. Locked hubs or 4wd engagment have no effect. The noise also intensifies as as the suspension encounters low or high spots in the road. For example when driving across a ripple in the road you will hear shh shh shh shh. It has 83k miles and I do not know if the trans. oil has ever been changed. Any help would be appreciated.

Really hard to tell just from your description (which was quite good by the way) but here goes:
With the windows up and the stereo off (hoiw often does THAT happen?) it is normal to hear the transmission a bit. Shhhhh under load isn't a bad description.
If a gear was going, you would have NO doubt.
If the bearings are going, here is what happens: Under load in 3rd or 5th especially, least of all in 4th, the shhh noise will be much louder. And it will change from a shhh noise to something more like - put a couple of BBs in an empty coffee can (the old style metal coffee can) and swish it around rapidly so the BBs go round and round. That sort of sound. When the bearings are getting REALLY bad, think of the BB thing again but put just a couple of grains of sand in there with them while you swirl them around. You hear it more in 3rd and 5th because those bearings get the most side loading, 4th is straight thru and doesn't get much load.

The noise can be heard in every gear, low speed and high speed. I have owned a few Yotas and all of them had a certain "whine" in the transmission but this is something different. I do think that it may be a little louder in 5th but as far as 3rd I'm not sure. Since the noise can be heard in every gear would it be a bearing on the main shaft or could it be on a certain gear? I also wonder why bumps in the road change the intensity. I obviously dont know much about the internal workings of a transmission. Thanks for your input.

I bought the truck @ 70k and I have not changed it so I have to assume that it has never been done. That brings to mind another question. I have read in some threads that GL-5 should not be put in this transmission but the manual recommends GL-4 or GL-5 75w 90.

Decellerating?
Constant speed only?
It would be pretty unusual to have a bearing noise only at a certain speed, but not load dependent. But that would be my first guess, a bearing, probably the pinion bearing. But it's really a wild guess. If it was the gears, or the U-joints (because of bad driveline angles or bad ujoints) it would typically be load dependant.

I had a moderate buzz during acceleration coming from what I was begining to think was the 5 spd trans when I discovered it was from a loose hand brake (emergency brake). If I slighly lifted the hand brake the noise would stop. I adjusted the cable tension and it's gone.

Here is another tack - I get a similar sound as a result of a throttle body spacer I put in. I get the sound when I accelerate mostly because that is when I am asking it to suck the most air.
Could a spacer have been installed and you don't know it? Just an idea....good luck.
