Did you call Toyota for warrantys or recalls? I would do that first. then if not then... um junk yard unless you wanna pay a few grand for a crate one from toyota. I feel extremly sorry for you. you have ran upon a rare case believe me. 3.4s are extremely tough and go 200-400k with not probs. they are amazing.... but u just got very unlucky....maybe got one that was asembled on a monday or a friday... you sure you oil was not run low? If there is some kind of warranty or recall... the first thing toyota is going to check is to make sure you had the right oil in it and if any.....

where do i find the date code or stamp code on the engine. I know i need a 3.4L but the mechanics stated I needed any earlier 99 date. they said there were some changes to the engine mid year. they said the mid year change wouldn't work? does that make sense? thanks again.

The date you are looking for is actually on the inside driver door frame. This is the only date you will find. some thing like 9/98 or before is one and after is the other. the oil dip stick is the only difference that I remember though. Not saying this is the only difference.
Look at the differences that will tell you if it will work.

Another thing you might want to check on is if the "new" engine is off a manual or auto. I swear I remember hearing that the output shaft/flywheel was irreconcilably different from one to the other - but don't quote me on that. Just something to check in to. Also, I think the 2001+ 5VZFE was throttle-by-wire vs. cable. Random thoughts to consider...

got her back!!
Well, after about 1.5 months I got my 4runner back. I was debating putting a new engine in or just getting a new 4runner. I didn't like the new ones as much and I didn't like the price tag either. So, I put a new (used) engine in mine. Had a friend find one at a junk yard with 60K miles on it and with the motor and labor got it done for 3k. Not bad, no car payment again and she purrs like a kitten. Good to have her back!! Thanks for all your help on the previous posts...

Nice. Every time I am tempted by a new Tacoma or 4Runner (esp the new 5th gen), I ask myself if the $20k I will end up paying justifies the benefits of getting a new truck. Short and simple answer always comes back "no."
