Hey all,

Just got home from one of those quick lube places and noticed on the print out they only greased 2 fittings. Well, curious as I am, I looked under the 1995 4WD V6 Runner and found 7 more they forgot. My question is, according to the Haynes manual I have there are lube points on the top and bottom of the steering knuckle. Do I have to install zerks on the top of the nuckle? The only thing I find is a small bolt. What about the bottom? I can't even find a place on the bottom knuckle to lubricate.

4 on the front D shaft?
4 for the ball joints
I always thought there were 11 total zerks to grease.

*Any idea which ones they "say" they greased? I hate lube shops for the reason you never know what they "say" they did.

 

BBB, what type of grease did you use on your balljoints when you had to replace them?
I'm hoping I can just pick some up from walmart, they have supertech brand grease with quite a few different numbers and names..

 

I used the Valvoline brand multipurpose. It didnt seem to want to take much grease though so mine may have been pre-greased.

 

ah, there's just so many differnent types I didn't know what to get... some have moly and others are just lithium, they all say not to mix with another type.. so if I can that multipurpose one maybe it'd be ok to use it on everything?

 

I to do not know much in the lines of which greases are which. I know molly & lithium or I should say I think are thinner based. The MP is thicker and seems to be working fine.

 

So can I go to a jiffy lube place and tell them to grease up my '93 Pickup 4X4 and they'll do it? I've been wanting to do it since I have no idea if it's even been done. How much would it cost? How many points should they grease?

They only greased two joints on the front passenger side. Where are the four for the front ball joints? Are the ball joints the same thing as a steering knuckle?

 

One good things that come out of this is they gave me my money back. I still didn't envy getting under that thing and greasing it. Usually have pretty good results with this place. Guess they never seen a Runner before.

if they only greased 2 spots on the front right I would say they greased the ball joints on that side. They may have missed the other 9 zerk fittings. Glad you got your money back. $30? If so buy a drain pan,funnel,grease gun & grease and start doing your own oil changes. That is the only way some of us can get the results we expect. Its to bad but sometimes thats the way it is. if you dont feel you know enough about lubing your rig we are all here for you. Just ask away.

I'm just lazy. I have all the stuff to do it with but it's hard not to pay someone this time of year with the heat and humidity of Arkansas. Here it only costs $19.33 for oil, lube, filter at Wally World. Castrol 10-40.

Blue, do you have to install zerks in teh top of the steering knuckle? I pulled a small bolt out but couldn't figure how to get lube into the joint. Also, I see a rubber boot on the bottom of the knuckle but REALLY can't see how to lube that.

I am trying to think of where you are talking about lubing with the steering knuckle.

If you are looking from the top, just behind the wheel, it apprears to look like a spindle that attaches to the A arm. There is a rubber "boot" that looks like it would hold grease on both the top and bottom. Not the CV boots of course. The Haynes manual says that in later models there are two bolts to remove to get to the lubrication point.

Those are ball joint boots.

 

The opening for ball joint boots are on the rubber boots.
Clean them off and you will see a short nipple facing towards the back of the truck.
The nipple has a little slit in it. Just squeeze the nipple to open it up.
I bought a needle fitting for the grease gun and stuck that in the slit.
The boot will puff up when you fill it and some of the old grease will spill out the slit.
The thicker the grease, the better it stays in the boot.

I just found that today, only thing is on the write up roadrunner linked us to, it says it's at the top... but the top is just a bolt for mine, not half of one like they show in the pic there...

so a needle fitting? I'ma drive to carquest and see if they have anything like that then.

 

I'm thinking of using that moly grease they talk about on the link for everything.. I wonder if I'd have any problems down the road doing that?

also on the bottom of the page on that link, it talks about driveshaft clunk. I think that's what my truck is doing as well, so I'll be greasing all that with the moly based grease unless anyone thinks that's a bad idea?

 

I've been using Synpower grease for everything.
It says its lithium based and also has moly.
I also had a clunk because the dealership never lubed my truck.
I took it there for all services for the first 7 years.
The grease was so old in the ball joints it was clear.
I have oil & lubed in the driveway for the last 3.

 

Some guys asy that it takes about two strokes and that's it. What is the PSI on your grease guns? I am about to buy one or two but they come in many different psi's. Thanks.
