Unfortunately, 2wd 4Runners are all too common. I park by one at work every day. Its discouraging.

yes, i know it happens and its a shame, i was just referring to the 4wd models labelled with the 4wd badge and not the 4x4 badge.

as for driving speeds, you can go greater than 100km/h in H2*H4 ..this is based on the owners manual.

wait a minute...you just had a previous post saying call it what it is and not what it feels like right?

for badging, some of the 4runners have the badge 4WD on the lift/tailgate or mudflaps, not 4X4...so if you want to get into semantics...

for reference go to post #3, with the pic
https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f2/b...emblems-26590/

and the conversation was just about a few guys going off tangent to figure out the differences in the 4wd systems of 3rd gen 4runners, they figured it out, so great. it was a good discussion depsite chasing tails at points and being off topic. It happens.

I'd like to see a 4Runner in any drivetrain mode go 140mph.

But I believe that you can go on the highway with the 4Runner (99-02 Limited/01-02 all trim) in 4HI. It doesn't say that you can't in the manual. It just says that you have to be going slower than 60mph to engage 4HI.

I had a 2002 Subaru Ipreza WRX with AWD (It has the stickers to prove it) and I could go 140MPH without worrying about things binding.
Ok, last post off-topic.

yes, you can drive in 4WD hi mode all day long and at any speed. In the owners book it says it can be used "at any rate of speed". You just can't engauge it above 60 miles per hour.

And yeah i want to see pics of the course!

sorry for the pics. i just used my celfone.

EDIT: oops! sorry, i forgot to attach the pics.

Are you sure? In the USA, the multimode 4wd wasnt available until 2000. If yours is the same as ours, then you don't have AWD, multi mode, or center diff. You just have the pushbutton 4wd, which is basically just a regular part time t-case with a electronic actuator that puts your rig in 4wd.

i dont get it, even after the links to the 4runner history section. The multi mode was added in 99 to the limiteds.

Adam,

It has Multi-Mode 4WD. see the first pic with the U-diagram on the transfer lever. when i push the 4WD button (second pic), the 4WD light on the instrument cluster lights up but only the 4 wheels. when I shift to either H4L or L4L, the center diff on the 4WD light turns orange.

Hilux Surf is a JDM vehicle and JDMs always get a lot of goodies that you guys in North Am can only dream of or maybe wait for a few more years before it gets to you..

I have attached a pic of the 4WD light. It's now in H4L. The orange circle is lit (orange color). When in H4 (AWD mode), the center circle doesn't light up..

you guys are always lucky, getting the goods before the North american market. I guess its a good way to anticipate changes here by comparing to the overseas counterparts

LOL.
I've had my old 89' at 65mph in the snow in 4wd locked centre diff no problem... with the centre diff unlocked there is no chance of binding so you are good to go at any speed....

We are going to the LR dealership tomorrow as we are going to get one of those LR2's. They are really nice. However, there is no way in hell I would be letting go of my 4Runner.

I will bring my camera for a couple course pictures. Will post here.

thread drift....

It clearly shows that making the VF4 series trans into a gear driven trans is a tough deal - becuase of the cocenttic shafts for Front and Rear drive.

It means a gear driven rear case is a major engineering exercise ( an new helical front drive gear with a cocentric hole - bearing loads are different as a helical gear tries to "push" in/out.

Moving the chain to the other side (passenger side drop) should just be an issue of CNC a new case...

Also the center Torsen locking feature is very slick due to the cocentric shafts... with a bit of lenght and some custom shafts a "front burn" could be built in.. very nice.
