I had a clanking sound under the same conditions you describe. My problem turned out to be the end of the exhaust pipe, located behind the passenger rear wheel. I had bent that section of pipe upwards while coming off a rock. It was bent far enough to bounce against the end of a frame-bolt located above and near the end of the pipe. Whenever the pipe shook and bounced a little bit, like hitting a bump or starting the engine, it clanked upward against the bottom of the bolt. I found the problem by pulling the pipe down and letting it snap up--clanking loudly, just like the noise I was hearing.
I bought a hard rubber stopper at ACE hardware, sawed it to fit, drilled a shallow hole in the top to cup the end of the bolt, had my wife step on the pipe to hold it down while I slipped the stopper between bolt and pipe, wife let go, and the upward pressure of the pipe held the cushioning stopper in place. No clanking! The first stopper lasted 9 months, exhaust heat and all. I just put in a new stopper to go another 9 months.

sis004runner, did you ever find the cause of your noise?
My clanking noise came back a few days ago, and I found that the replacement stopper from the solution described above had worn/melted thru already. Many hours of 4lo wheeling during hot days apparently took their toll. So today I put in a new stopper but didn't saw any off the end so it will last longer. I took some pics to show how the stopper stops my clanking noise, for a few months at least. Cheaper than a new exhaust pipe assembly, which is what a muffler shop told me was the only solution.
Old rubber stopper burned thru and pipe started clanking on bolt again.
Here is the new stopper with a shallow hole drilled in for the end of the bolt.
Here is the new stopper in place and stopping my clanking.
