I have put K&N filters on every car and truck I have owened. However In this 4runner ( 88 3.0L V6 ) it was a very noticable increase in throttle responce and power ( exspecially in Higher RPMs )

for some reason a lot of the guys on this board don't like the k&n's and im not totally sure why. im still running a paper filter.

 

I have seen that. I was skeptical too, confused really. I went ahead and got one because its is what ive always done. But I have never noticed such a big responce to just the airfilter.

 

I ran a K&N on my bike and loved it. Put one on my Tacoma and never noticed a definite improvement. Then after 5000 k decided to check it. They allow way too much dirt to get past the filter. I was shocked at how much. You will see it where the rubber intake duct meets the intake plenum. The K&N was pulled and returned and my stock paper went back in.
I wish i would have taken a picture . If you value your motor stick to paper.

 

As I do a lot of daily offroad driving, the stock air filter allowed so much dirt to pass thru that my MAF sensor went bad. I've always been a big K&N user in the past so I went to their intake system, thinking It would increase my performance and reduce the amount of dirt passing into my engine, I was wrong.. More dirt passed thru than ever before and the only increase was the noise level. I ended up putting the stock intake system back on, with a 5" deckplate mod and trying the AMSoil filter.

 

You need to check it more frequently than that. When the oil is gone, so is much of the filtering effectiveness. I clean/reoil when I change the engine oil. I haven't seen any dirt in my intake. I'm running a drycharger wrap now - mainly for guarding against splashes. Even before without the wrap, there wasn't any appreciable grime in the intake.

 

I have the K&N in mine and the jury is still out on it as I'm still checking mine and so far so good but the first sign of it getting bad I'll go back to the OEM ones.

I did have success with a K&N on my turboed Eclipse and after 25k the turbo fins had no signs of any dirt getting through.

Your lucky you didnt see any grime. I sure wasnt impressed with my $80 filter . I was always a big fan of K&N and even recommended them. But after me seeing what they allow into the system. No thanks. Im glad you have better luck with yours.
Also. I had never taken my truck off road. the filter never saw a dirt road before i checked it. So i dunno. Not worth it to me.

 

I think the dry wrap he's talking about is a cover that K&N makes. It goes over the filter to protect it a little more from dust, dirt, water, or whatever.

 

hey guys I work in construction lots of mud and dust all day and i've never had a problem with the filter. You do have to be carefull about the fit though. If you just switch to a cone filter without building a support for the MAS then the weight of it will put some force on the seal on the back of the filter and could allow some grit in. Also be sure you check the underside of the filter too. Mine looked just fine from on top but when i pulled it to oil it I found the bottom to be almost completely dry! I think it does that because it is getting "blown on" by the air off the fan.
If you just used a drop in replacement they are sometimes a tighter fit then the stock paper one and need a little care fitting in . One other thought check the torque on the various ring clamps that seal the intake together i found a few on mine that had over the years come a little loose. Aviator

Is the DryChrager wrap helping keep out any smaller dust/dirt particles? I'm considering one mainly for water/splash on my FIPK install and just wondered what kind of results I can expect.

I have a 98 ltd with the deck plate mod and the K&N and it is an impressive amount of difference. I noticed it was better at low RPM's but not that impressive but when I got it in the hight RPM's it was real noticable.

 

I installed a k&n about three weeks back and i too noticed the same power and response as you are feeling! i have a 95 4runner 3.0

 

You can get about the same results from a cheep cone filter off ebay which is what I did. Only downfall is I had to fab my own mounts and heat shield. Only cost me about $50 said and done though.

 

I've had one for about a year and it keeps my intake air pretty darn clean...my intake piping stays perfectly clean (i have a breather so no pcv residue gets in their either) and I've submerged the thing in mud and while it was a pain to clean nothing got past it

 

yeah I know what you mean it seams real cheap that way but the deck plate mod is only $10 for the deck plate itself and the K&N is only about $55 or so. And the what I like most of all is that if you have ever checked out the deck plate mod you choose when you want to use it and when you don't. Other than that I also like the liftime warrenty on the K&N. But you do have a good idea just sounds like alot of work so save a few $.
