import a killer turbo diesel 4rnr from japan!
anyone look into the killer deals on 4x toyotas in japan? anyone try buying one and shipping one over here? those diesel powered rigs get up past 30mpg! maybe up to 25mpg on landcruisers! pop in chips and get mad torque i'd imagine. if anyone knows how to get them over here, TELL ME! i'm talking about used ones. used car depreciation's steeper in japan than any other country. prices are in japanese yen. use online currency converters.

so they can be shipped to the states! i have a '98 jetta turbo diesel here in CA and i never pay for smog checks ! diesels are no problem here! btw i've gotten 65mpg w/ the jetta!

I'm just interested in the turbo-diesel itself. I already have the 95 4Runner and that vintage is only getting cheaper. I keep thinking about what it would take to drop a turbo-diesel into it. But the closest place I can find that imports Toy diesel 4Runners or trucks is Costa Rica. Of course....the labor on a swap would be cheaper down there.

That looks like the 2.4TDI engine I have in mine (most of us in the UK have this motor or the later 3.0TDI engine. The 3.0TDI is the one to go for, reasonable power and more reliable.
The 2.4TDI (2LTE engine) has a history of cracked heads, although mines OK at the moment and I hope it will stay that way.
If you want serious power t ain't the lump to go for but for smooth torquey power take up when running off road then Diesel does it every time - unless you got a Small Block Chevy in it.
Acftually looking at it again it could be the 3.0TDI lump.
And as for fuel economy 22 - 25 mpg is about what you get.

If you contact them about a Surf, I'm interested, too. I posted a similar topic a few weeks ago. I'd much rather have a turdo diesel 4x4 commuter that gets 30-35 mpg than a 2wd Escort

I have a Hilux 3.0 TD
Hi, I live in Argentina, where 4runners are imported under the name Hilux SW4 and they all come with a 3.0 turbo diesel.
You can see mine in my page, and in the menu bar you can click on "Especificaciones" or "Specifications" to see every detail about the truck.
By the way, 30 mpg is right. Is what I get from mine.

I'm curious if my current 4.56 gears would work with the 3.0 diesel engine. Seems to me that diesels turn far less RPMs and that I'd probably have to put 4.10s in. If I can keep my 4.56 gearing then I'd be very happy.

2 2.06:1
3 1.43:1
4 1.00:1
5 0.83:1
Diff: 3.90:1

Going through the numbers very quickly I think 4.10 would work very well with 265/75r16. How odd that 4.10 would be a very good gear considering almost everyone swaps those out. Should be easy to find em - if I ever actually find a 3.0 diesel to swap in. If I keep my 4.56 gears I'd have to go with 35 or 36 inch tires. For someone who wants a torquey engine and be able to do an SAS with big tires it would make for a cool combo.
