i need some opinions...

hey guys, haven't been on here for like over a month, but figured while i was checkin some things out to ask everyone for an opinion on my question, which is:

right now i'm thinking about selling my 4runner when the summer gets here, and using money from working my butt off over the summer and trying to get a nice car that will last through college, get good mileage, and look good doing it all. i've decided i really want to try and get an '02 or '03 acura rsx, hopefully a type-s. i hate to sell my toyota, as it's my first truck and all, but 21 mpg is way less than 31+mpg on my highway trips to and from college with gas going towards $3.50 a gallon. so tell me what you think about me selling it and, if any of you guys would like (as i'd appreciate it), what you might pay for my ride. and please, don't bash the thread, as i'm looking for advice. but here's a pic or two, and my sig explains my rig. it also just hit 160k miles today and is sitting 10 miles over that now. thanks in advance for any help

You gotta do what you gotta do. I was in the same boat you are but since I've decided keeping my 4runner is probably the best option since its paid off....is yours?

I hope to soon buy just a car of some sort...keep the 4runner as the weekend warrior/trail rig/adventure vehicle for camping and playing around. I would advise you doing the same only because you'll never get what you put into it....

thanks for the quick reply bro...and i'd love to get a beater and keep it, but since the parents help with insurance and all somewhat, i'd have to get one or the other and stick with that. but yeah, i'm hoping the $7-8k range will sell it, as i know i can make a little over $4k over the summer to help out with the new ride cost...

and to skrillah:
yeah, it was paid off the day it left the lot...lol. but in high school it was great having it, b/c when i had to go hunting or fishing by myself, i had a rig made for that. but college takes a lot of that time away, so i think it'll end up being the car way...

yeah, mine was around $8300 with 137k on it the summer of 2005. and true, as it's got a few options on it. i don't expect the add-ons to really help my value any, but there's planty on autotrader and what-not that's going for $8k-8500, and they're not as good a shape as mine.

I've been in the same position. Make sure you consider your insurance hike by moving to a newer coupe. I have no tickets and that move would double my insurance. Even if i got 10 more mpg I would have to a lot of driving to break even let alone be ahead.

My advice: keep your truck; it is dependable and gets reasonable gas millage. Save your money from working.
Live on campus housing or nearby and ride a bike.

i'd say you could get around 7-8? i paid 12,000 for mine last spring with 110k on it. to bad you have to sell your 4runner though, but i know what you mean as after this year i'll actually have to move out and commute to school so i do not blame you one bit. hopefully things can work out as that would be a nice acura to get.

to birfieldbuster: yeah, i know i want to try and get an rsx, but if the type-s is too much insurance wise, i'd get the 5-speed version. but i've gotta get the insurance guys number and make a call and get some new quotes. i'd love to keep my rig, but it's 220 miles to college one-way when i go home, and with one of these cars and even if gas were at $4 a gal, it would only cost me around $26 to get there, while now at $3.25 a gal, it costs me around $40, b/c of driving in town also

and to desertyodaboy: i can't do that, as i stated b4, the parents help with insurance, and i know they don't want 5 cars all together...and my sister's a/b to turn 16 too...

and to sloan: yeah, the price range you guys are saying is what i'm gonna shoot for...and i think my dad knows a few guys who work in different car dealerships sales departments, so maybe that'll help.

but thanks for the help guys, and please keep any more help coming...

get a 2 door car with really small seats in the back this will discourage people from bumming rides all the time.

Go home less often, during my semester i usually go home once every 2 months thats 160 miles, and maybe add another 100 miles here and there a month. I walk everywhere, unless its more than 3-4 miles away. You have 160k on the clock that isnt bad at all. i would just keep her.

i bought my runner a little over a year ago for 7700, with 95k on the clock.

well, i would go home less often, but i do like getting to see the family, and plus last summer my grandad had heart surgery with 5 bypasses, so his health still isn't that great, so i try to go see him on my trips home also, which is about another 40 miles from my home. and yeah, i already walk everywhere at college...only drive once every weekend to go to the store. and i think i'll pass on the gf's camry...haha

but who knows, gas may start coming down (highly doubt it) and i'd keep it...we'll just have to see...
