How-to: Pinstripe Removal *pics-56k*
#21
I have a black 93 with the cheesy looking graphics. I am considering removing the graphics and the Toyota on the tailgate. My only reservation is that the truck is black... Has anyone removed them off a black vehicle with sucess?

how deep is your black still? again, it depends on your paint fade/quality.
another way to look... how does your paint on your doorjams look compared to your exterior paint?
ex: when you lower your rear tailgate, does that paint match?

Man when I did mine it took me a couple days, but mostly because I would get bored..
I used a blow dryer, goo gone, a plastic paint scraper, and cleaned it up with some polish.. turned out awesome...

Hey Crappled-
Do ya think that method would work for bigger stripes? Really big?
How long would it hold up, and how time consuming is it really?
Here's what I need to remove - two 6" stripes 24 feet long. They've been on there since 1978, and the surface is very thin old gel coat. (So I can't use scrapers, razors, or chemicals. UGH!) Obviously, I'm talking about the stripes on the boat, not the truck...
Any thoughts?

gel coat probably wouldn't be the best candidate for this. also, it's seen seawater since 1978.
it'd probably remove the stripes, but i deff would think the paint would come with it.
this 'eraser' works by friction, there is more friction from plastic stripes than with cleared paint... not too sure about your situation *shrug*
it'd probably take a good 3 hours to remove the stripes... it took maybe 10 min on my 4r.

I think I'll try it. Can't hurt to try, somehow they have to come off. The other side was badly damaged - I've repaired the fiberglass but need to paint the whole boat. There is no paint on there, the yellow color is gelcoat, so if it doesn't hurt the gelcoat I'm good!
Thanks!
Thanks!

if you're going to have to repaint the whole thing... that spray that was posted a few posts ago is about $12 a can iirc. i just don't trust it on paint you want to stay nice looking.

so i recently picked up a 91 runner [good points are rebuilt engine3500miles,perfectly straight body and zero rust as it was sitting in a seattle garage most of its whole life kinda deal, and the total miles were only like 152xxx]and it is on the road to a long list of mods i wanna do....
one thing i wanna do right away is get rid of those gawd awful pinstripes!
so i read this post and went to napa and they gave me the astro smart eraser pad 400e instead of the 3m version apparently.
well the one they gave me doesnt have the mandrel or arbor thing that connects it to the drill....im angry as heck! i went all over town and i cant find one yet...i havent went back to napa cuz im feelin like they ripped me off cuz as i was leavin the guy says "see you soon" like he knows i dont have what i need..haha rude huh?
anyone know where to go other than napa/...if not ill bite it and walk back in there..sigh... a pic of the mandrel im talkin bout

Second that Notion I used my wifes hair blow dryer and a strait razor took me a whole 45 mintues for each side and it looked awesome afterwards! But Congrats on your 4runner, looks great without the bling stripes. No Stripes=Cleaner looking Ride IMO

Sorry to post on a dead thread, maybe I will start a new one. I have a 2nd gen ('94) that has striping on the side, however it is kinda textured in a way. I want to have it off because it is faded and looks bad. I bought the rubber wheel and it worked pretty well, however the bumpy texture from the stripes remained and I am having a tough time getting it off. Any suggestions for this?
