But back to the original question regarding redlining--it won't hurt your vehicle if you exceed the redline on occasion, but there is no point in doing it on purpose as the maximum hp and torque falls off significantly before you reach redline. I have hit the rev limiter a time or two but always on accident.
On my V6 truck, I shift at about 5300 RPMs for maximum acceleration. The HP peak is either 4500 or 4800 and taking it just past the peak will get you closer to the sweet spot in the next gear. The Supra's redline is 6500 and it accelerates best if I shift around 6000 rpms.

I had 2 Pathfinders and bounced off the redline with those in 1st and 2nd they where autos so I would expect no less from my Toyota V8, I run it up to redline all the time infact it has so much power that a lot of times I don't even need to redline but I do.
After I hit 5k maybe I'll manually shift it and see where the fuel shut off is at each gear.
I'll add that the truck goes 90-110 as fast as it goes 40-60

Ever driven a crappy Automatic GM car that shifts for you even when you try to manually shift it? Man I hate that. Why wont they let me bounce rental cars off the rev limiter!

On the V8 comment: When I had my Tundra V8, I had *no* trouble getting it to 110. I see the 4runner as a bit more of a challenge in that respect; I never took the Tundra past that point but the engine could have done it.
I was mostly kidding about trying to top the 100mph thing, I mean if it happens it happens but I'm not going to go seek it out just for this thread. I hope no one else does either, if you have pics of past exploits then cool, but don't go risking your lives just for this! I should point out that the only times I have ever gone triple digits in a car have been on wide open stretches of road with 360 visibility and no traffic. Under no circumstances do I ever recommend doing it in an urban setting!
