OOPS -forgot to mention that along with all the other componenents mentioned above, I also replaced the crankshaft pulley bolt and the TB tensioner bolt. The crankshaft pulley bolt is a special "stretch bolt" that is supposed to be replaced if it is ever removed. The TB tensioner bolt has pre-applied threadlocker and is also supposed to be replaced. If I can get 150,000totally trouble-free miles between timing belt changes, then paying a few extra $ for this hardware is no issue. I off-road in some very remote and inhospitable areas, and treat 4WD vehicle reliability the same as if it was a private plane: an engine failure can have serious consequences, so (within reason) anything I can do to maximize reliability is worth whatever it costs.

This is nice to know I can let my timing belt on my 3.0 go for 120 miles +.

You can get 120k on your 3.0. Unlike the 22re, which is a chain, and an interference engine, your 3.0 is an non-interference engine... so if you push it too long, and it breaks, it is not going to damage your engine... you just lose power... which of course can be dangerous if you are in a situation where you need power... but otherwise its safe.

My own theory is that if you have an automatic, or are easy on your clutch... meaning no sharp loads on the engine/drivetrain... you can easily reach 120 on the belt, although I've been doing 90... just because my dealer is inexpensive, does a good job etc. They ran a sale last time, cost me $210.. if I recall correctly.

The 22re(c), otoh, being more critical, is a chain.. and gives some warning in the way of noise. Lasts longer, like any chain, but it can be expensive if you go too long and ignore the warning sounds... apparently noise of the chain hitting the guide.. which gets worse (louder) with time.

There is enough competition in the bay area to produce at least one best dealer.

I'm not a fan in general, of using dealers. But they keep the records, provide me with insistent reminders on safety recalls, and never (so far) have "found" anything else that "needed to be done".

Some businesses are just run better than others.... as I'm sure you all know. Their excellence makes us a loyal customer... despite the long drive to their new location.

Having read through the first 2 pages or so of this thread (I'm not about to read the entire thread) regarding timing belt service pricing - If you're in the Denver area, Toy Doctor has a regular timing belt change ONLY for $189. Anything else that needs service and/or replacement will obviously be more. I've made a few calls to them this week as the truck in this signature finally gave out on me and I'm buying an '01 Tacoma with a 3.4. Reading up and learning more about this engine now.

1996 4Runner V6, belt has been replaced every 60,000. Truck has 182,000 on it now and every time I have had it replaced the old belt looked good as new. I think I am going to go 90k maybe 100k on this belt? Although I am kind of worried about the water pump. I hear a squeak in the motor.

60k is 30k miles too early according to Toyota's recommended schedule and I just went 138k on my original one and figured it was time and it's nice to know I have at least another 100k til I have to worry again. I also did the WP too but neither the belt or the pump was going out.

There is a toyota specialist up the road ( Toy Doctor) Denver... that wiil change the timing belt out for $175 (pretty cheap) But the water pump is $300 more LOL!!

@ 172K and the WP has started leaking was trying for 180K.
ill finally do it this weekend. (& thank$$ to Rafa @ Northridge Toyota )

OK...so after reading for a bit I know two things.

1.186K on factory belt -never changed- I bought the truck with 15k on it in 98.
2.I am now nervous as hell

I just bought a 98 ltd 2wd with 242,000 miles on it for a "work car"about a month ago. Beside oil,filters, and tune-ups, no other work was performed as best as the original owner can remember. I Did a tune-up ,changed out 1 injector, replaced rear shocks, replaced with Kenwood, system and added 17" TRD wheels. I guess I'll tackle the TB,WP change out real soon. BTW I paid $500 for it. Any one know a mechanic in the Houston TX area? Thanks

Wow, you stole that thing. I just sold a wrecked '98 SR5 (both airbags deployed) with over 250K miles for $1500. I know a good mechanic down your way. He's a Toyota master cert. mechanic, but does side work. PM me your contact info and I'll have him get in touch.

It would be surprising if your belt and water pump are original-I think that's a winner unless I missed a post. Let us know what you find when do the belt. Your email addy has been sent to "Toyota Joe".
